LOC may be doing funny stuff. Disconnect it and test it.

I'd preach but cheaping out is an art I guess.

Even a cheap 2v deck, without sub outs would improve everything imo.

How much can something like that cost after all?

Not many place alot of value in car audio. Especially if one is just starting out. Baby steps.

Depends on his stock head unit. Might run other things. I've always added good heat units, but my new truck came with the 12" screen and it operates lots of other features. I've looked and there's no dash kits or anything if I tried to replace it. Personally I would've preferred the base stereo so I could rip it out easier, but came with a "900 watt " Alpine. Sounds like 200 watts

Although I've seen super cheap HU's for not much more than $25 with rca outs.

I remember fighting cheapo gear once upon a time myself, the cost ended up being greater than just being sure I had good signal in the 1st place.
