2 ohm and 4 ohm?

I have a JL HD600/4 amp running Perfects up front and kappas in the rear. The Perfects are 4ohm and the Kappa's are 2 ohm. As some of you know I have been having a problem with certain speakers cutting in and out at very loud volumes. Do you think that running two different ohm speakers off the same 4 channel amp could be causing my problems? Supposedly the amps can handle 1.5ohm-4ohm, but with two different load levels could this be causing my amp to act weird and cut out speakers? Because with my old PPI amp it did the same thing, even worse, with the same different ohm level speakers.

thanks

if you have Perfects running off 2 channels, and the Kappas running off 2 different channels, you shouldnt have a problem. are they comps (did you hook them up right) did you set the gains too high.

The difference in impedance doesn't matter as long as it's within the operating range (which it is). The cut out issue is probably based around low voltage at the amp or something shorting out when running at high volumes. It could be tinsel leads hitting each other and causing a quick short which would make the amp cut out but when that happens, the speaker leads would not be touching anymore and the amp would come out of protect. I had that happen to one of my first systems and it took me forever to track down the issue. I separated the tinsel leads to one speaker and glued them down and never had a problem after that. I would look into the low voltage issue first though.

well we did some testing and let the problem happen. This time I looked at the power light on the amp and when the speaker or speakers were cutting out the amp light would turn amber then back to green. It kept doing it. I looked it up in the JL HD600/4 manual and this is what it said:

3) Constant Amber (yellow): lights to indicate

that the impedance of the speaker load

connected to the amplifier is lower than

the optimum load impedance range for the

amplifier. When this light is on, a protection

circuit engages and reduces the power output

of the “Front” or the “Rear” channels,

depending on which channel is experiencing

the problem. The amber indicator will also

light when a short-circuit is detected in the

speaker wiring (this can be a short between the

positive and negative speaker wires or between

either speaker wire and the vehicle chassis).

This can be used to diagnose a short-circuit by

only connecting one of the amplifier sections

at a time (“Front” or “Rear” channels). The

amber LED will light when you connect the

section that is experiencing the problem and

turn the volume up.

anyone, please give me some input...thanks!

It sounds like what I was describing above with the tinsel leads. It's not a low voltage problem but a short problem. You need to inspect each one of your mids and see if the tinsel leads can hit each other when you're driving them hard. You should try to separate all the tinsel leads and you might want to glue them down with a flexible adhesive to the spider.

Good job of recreating the situation and getting more information.
