2 18" in an explorer sport

just brainstorming a little bit. got this idea least night when i was drinking a bit so if this idea is retarded...well thats why. i have good experience with 15" subs as far as box size and whats is generally a good box volume. however with 18"'s im kinda lost.

talking about the 18" BL in particular. each one needs 5-10 cubes...

1 - whats that spectrum cover? i see most people running roughly 6 cubes per 18". so where does the 10 cubes come in...is that stricly an spl comp style box (ie, big box big power, big numbers) or what?

2 - this one is more so for anyone that knows, or has experience. is it possible to fit 2 18" is a PROPER box in an explorer sport? measured some last night and measuring roughly 5" from the hatch, all the way across for width, and only up to the headrests in the back i got 11 cubes gross volume. i can also go across the wheel wells if need be and go above the rear head rests.

this is basically to just get ideas. i know bamaboy is running 12 cubes for his 18"s and like i said 6 cubes seems to be the average. whats everyones take on this?

2 18" or 2 15"s?

George

too much money lol. i would be running a kx2500.1 (birthsheet says 2960w). so 4 15's are a lot of money on their own, plus needed another amp most likely. and then the electrical upgrades for the new amp.

gotta be able to work somewhat well with my 200 or so amps on hand.

I don't think you'll be able to stay under the headrests. 11 cubes gross, but remember, alot of bracing, and 2 18's need a big @$$ port! I'm using 7.5 for 1 BL. if you can't fit the BL's, check out mach 5 MJ18's. heard good things about them, and they only need 4.5 cubes a peice.

Now that I see your amp, (and your sig) I don't think the MJ's would work out.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

well im not worried about staying under the headrests. it was mostly just to give an idea of what i have to work with. staying within the parameters i posted it gives me 11 cubes gross. like i said its just brainstorming. ive even thought about taking out my 2nd row of seats to give me room since i hardly have passengers. this would give me room to brace as much as i feel like without worrying that im sacrificing anything. i WOULD like to stay in the rear but like i said this is just me seeing how far this idea will go.

anyone know anyone with a setup similar to this?

i know SHiZNiLTi is running some 18" mt's in a blazer, and i know the blazer is of similar size ( the 2 door version), but he has a "wall" if you will, thats not completely sealed off.

problem with this is, ive heard that if you dont build a wall at least up to the the B pillar in an explorer, youll be louder with a regular box.

like i said im not worried about staying under the headrests. when i had my 2 15's with a nice sized port, i couldnt stay under them either. so im not expecting that. that was just to give an idea of what room i have to work with in that specified area.

im willing to basically go almost to the roof for a box, but im having a hard time convincing myself that wont cause SOME kind of issues with how the subs sound in car.

edit: also from what i understand the kicker can be taken to a .7ohm load and be stable. 2 dual 1 ohm (.7) fi subs would make it possible to get at that load in a series/parrellel wiring. or dual 1.4's can be taken to a 1.4 ohm final load.

I have the 4 15''s i have in my mountaineer for sale actually ($700) that i was bassracing almost 48's with 2400 watts. Id imagine with almost 3000, and a lil better box, you could bassrace 50's no problem

not really lookin to compete at all lol. just want a loud daily driver //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

it also does 49's at 35hz
thats no joke right there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

edit: by the way if anyone has any names, links, posts, on something similar feel free to post it. ive only found a few threads (one was SHiZNiLTi's) and they werent too helpful. google didnt help either. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

double edit: woops the BL's are actually dual .7 or dual 1.5, not 1.7.

triple edit: happened to find a nice little post at ssa about a guy with 2 18's in a mountaineer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif . hopefully he can give me some answers

George, I am the one that built Bamaboy's box and I also helped design the box for the guy with the mountaineer on SSA (he's got 2 Q series 18's right??). I will simply tell you that there is not a hard and fast rule on the cubic footage requirements. I will also tell you that the cubic volume required is more of something that is directly proportionate to the amount of power you intend to run. Please keep in mind that Steve Meade runs all four 18's in 20 cubes net. That's 5 cubes per 18. There's a guy by the name of MatrixxDude (or something like that) and he was running his in something less than 4 cubes I think, but he competes in Db drag. Personally, if I were trying to do (2) 18's in your vehicle and had plenty of power on tap, I'd go with something between 4.5-5 cubes net. People are going to absolutely passout when they read my post, but I have done quite a number of boxes for 18's and in my experience I prefer the sound from the smaller boxes. For some reason people are under the assumption that just because you use a smaller box you can't tune low, but that is simply not true. Like I said, if you have power on tap go small. Let me know what you think.

Matrxx ran 3.5 cubes tuned at 37hz, but it was pretty much competition only. He listened to it daily, but it wasnt built for that. Also at one point he had 12000 watts on it hence the box size.
