18xxx question

i am thinking of getting an 18" sub. mainly an 18xxx. i am probably going to go with a ported box. i have two questions.

1. should i build the box to RE specs? they say 7.5 cubes, is that good or what size box should I be shooting for?

2. what kind of power should i throw at this thing? am i going to need electrical upgrades?

it is going to be my daily driver, but i still like it loud. i want to keep some sq, but keeping it loud. as of now the vehicle can change, i have an SUV but i am thining of selling it for a car. i listen to a lot of music, mainly rap and classic rock, hippie music, no country.

yeah, the specs were pretty general on the re site, thats why i asked

edit: found it, 7.5 cubes. should i stay in that range?

1600-2000 would be optimal.

To run a true 1600-2000w you will need at least a Big 3 and a rewraped alternator.

I definatly agree with you there. David himself has said the XXX is a sealed enclosure woofer, It just happens to sound good ported too. That big of a woofer and the amount of port needed alone would sway me tword sealed. 18XXX's have no problem in ported app's. Ask ngsm

if you have the room, port it.

i have the room for a ported box, but if it isn't going to maintain the sq i might go with a sealed box. i have never heard one in person, but everyone raves about the sq of this woofer, and i would want to use it to it's potential. and i am sure an 18 would still get loud in a sealed box

Point is, they sound good in both. the only sonic difference between ported and sealed with ANY driver is flatness of responce unless there is alot of mechanical noise from the driver...in which case it isnt an SQ driver anyway.

Diff Peoples definition of loud is different....

155 is loud to some

135 is loud to others...
