//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/beatdeadhorse5.gif.5d70132dea1eb89b73bf2fdbb6027dd6.gif sometimes you can hear distortion due to clipping since clipping is a form of distortion, but they are NOT one in the same.
they are but u just don't understand how.........here we go lesson 101........when a sound reaches a full square wave meaning clipping over digital absolute zero meaning it hits that absolute zero wall and get can't over you hear clipping aka distortion but distortion can be used in a mix without the entire mix clipping example electric guitars use distortion as an effect this is somewhat what u mean when u say u can hear distortion when its really not clipping I can put a sound too loud in a mix and when it goes to mastering that sound may be distorted but that doesn't mean the whole mix is but if u can hear distortion that means that the sound has turned into clipped square wave doesn't mean the whole entire mix is so if its the high hat u hear sounding distorted that high hat is clipping but the whole song might not be this also can happen if a sound is not loud enough in a mix because when that limiter slams it down and its not loud enough it will amplify a sound that's not there making distortion the sound waves of higher frequency sounds don't carry as much weight as kicks as they will go into red quicker than a any other sound because the fq is so much lower it needs to be amplified a lot more to heard clearly this goes for all music the kicks will the loudest thing most of the time even if doesn't that loud now some of what u hear in the higher end that u think is distortion is really not our ears have a comfort zone and when high hats are screaming at u its not distortion it's cheap speakers/amps that are not representing the sound to it's original recording in the car audio world this is usually the case because of this **** people call sq setups don't even come close to comparing to actual studio monitors if u never been in a studio don't even comment on that but u no what u guys no everything I no nothing I make music everyday u just have high end playback systems can't tell me the definition of a sine wave but yeah u could what I do tomorrow if u wanted to because yeah distortion and clipping are not the same GL

Contradiction, or maybe your wording just *****. Either way, by definition, distortion refers to errors in the exact reproduction of the input signal. Just like you stated, distortion can happen without clipping which is the point I was making from the start. You said they were one in the same, and then said they are not.

Your initial statement was that "when you amplify a sound that isnt there thats how you get distortion and distortion is what blows coils". This is still untrue. As stated distortion is any error in the exact reproduction. If distortion is what kills speakers then how do any of us still have speakers today? Some form of distortion will always be there, some forms are simply not audible to the human ear; but, they are still present. So, see, distortion does not blow speakers.

Clipping is, what some may call, an extreme form of distortion where, as stated the ends of the sine wave are "clipped off". That square wave has more area under it than the maximum unclipped sine wave does and thus the amplifier outputs more power that ultimately kills the driver. How? OVERHEATING!

Therefore, my initial comment still stands, neither distortion nor clipping directly kill a sub. The effects of clipping, i.e HEAT, are what cause a driver to fail.

what's the definition of a sine wave??

WRONG AGAIN I'm threw with this thread lol read a book son lol
If this is the type of education that audio engineering courses are providing, its no wonder our country is in a world of hurt. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Why waste the money if you don't even use proper spelling, punctuation or grammar? An employer won't take you seriously if you write like that.

What do you make out of a sawtooth pattern sine wave, smartass? That would represent some of the even harmonic Distortion you get from an electric guitar rig or overdriven tube amp. Why tube amp? The type of distortion they make is even harmonic and is "pleasing" to the ear compared to a square wave, clipped signal.

This type of distortion is a deviation from the original signal. Its not reproducing the original material, but is still deemed "pleasing" to the ear by audiophiles because the noise adds harmonics to the original material, whether you are conscious of it or not.

Even a high end pair of studio monitors can't compare to a high end set of studio headphones. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The headphones take out any room reverb or gain you would have reproducing music in a studio environment, regardless of the amount of sound dampening.

I write and record electric guitar music (as a hobby), so I have a pretty fundamental experience with achieving distortion free reproduction in the right enviroment....

I'll sell u this

http://www.caraudio.com/forums/subwoofer-classifieds/530931-15-t3-dd-tss-9515g-hybrid-t3-digital-designs-subs.html

My level 4 15 blew.. again. I'm going to recone it and sell it. I'm looking at these subs. Out of these subs what do you think is the best choice?
HDC 4.0 15"

DD 9515

SSA XCON

I.A. Death Penalty

I do not want DC or Fi, ever again. Since I first got the sub the **** thing was scratching out of the **** box. Right now I'm running a MTX Thundercast 15 and it isnt loud at all, but it sure sounds a hell of alot better. If anyone says its the install's fault im smashing your left nut. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm willing to spend some serious cash on a good quality sub.

Good rittens, go back to audio school, or whatever it is that you think you do... You obviously don't know as much as you think you know.. Pric3 pretty much shot down what you thought you knew... thread/

Ur fault the sub failed.. A lvl 4 can take way more then your amp can produce. You prob clipped it to death.. Get whatever sub you want you will be back calling them crap too once it fails.

The problem was overexcursion. the sub still moves.. it can move up, im looking at it and the coil is crooked, and the spider is jacked.
