14.4...why not 13.8?

got a ?
when someone says their amp does, say 500 watts at 14.4v with .05% thd, did they get 500 watts right before clipping and checked to see how much thd there was and thats how they came up with .05% thd

or do they pick out a % of thd, say .02 and see how much power the amp puts out at 14.4v with that .02% thd

lost ya, didnt i?
bump............

or use the CEA true power ratings for ALL amps. would make amp shoppin a hell of a lot easier.
some kid posting on CCA yesterday was bummed cause his MTX amp with '900 watts' on the heatsink turned out to be a 300 watt amp..... and I'm sure that amp had a CEA rating, it just wasn't advertisted on the heatsink....

what it all gets down to is consumer awareness...

oh shyt, the topic at hand....

even with a loosely regulated power supply; the difference between the same amp rated at 14.4V and 13.8 is not going to be audible.....

some of you guys are into spl so I won't even go there..... except to say the 'reactive' tests I've seen with a clamp, a dmm, and a sub... are basically useless.....

I know Sundownz and Fargof (and probably a couple others) already addressed it, but...

Before I found this site and started reading (about 5 months ago and I still know NOTHING), I'd look at onlinecarstereo.com and see my BXi2006D with 2000 RMS going for $345, while the equivalent Kicker (or any other reputable amp) was going for two and three times more.

There I was, with no knowledge, thinking Hifonics were this amazing value, and wondering why more people didn't use them. I figured people payed more for the names, and for aesthetics.

You're an uninformed teenager looking for some "bumps" (//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif), what are you going to buy, the $350 Hifonics with 2000 RMS, or the $430 Kicker with only 1500 RMS?

The average consumer doesn't know much, which is why Best Buy and Circuit City still sell car audio.

Because that's what the CEA board members decided to use.

More importantly, it doesn't make a s|-|ittin' bit of difference in the real world.

It's just a standard by which power comparison of any two amps can be made. 14.4, 13.8, 12.5 - who cares?

if amp A is cea rated at 100x2, and amp be is 125 you know amp b is more powerful.

I don't see the confusion.

Besides - if an amp varies by a couple hundred watts from 14.4 to 13.8 it must be -- 1) a multi KW amp, and 2) the loosest regulated amp that is made. Plus, if number 1 is true you can't hear a 200w difference in power anyway.

A GOOD, well regulated amp will be only a few percent difference in power from 12-14v.

Even a loosely regulated amp is not likely to be audibly different - maybe 10-20%

Why does everyone keep repeating the same answers over and over in this thread? Anyone mention CEA yet? Or unregulated power supplies? How about consistency between manufacturers, anyone address that yet?

Guys, I think the OP gets it by now. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
