12 volt battery charger question

I have 3 hc2400's and i hooked up a 12 volt battery charger to them just to let them charge a little more. They have been sitting at 12.78 and when i turn the charger on i read 16.xx on the volt meter! Before anyone says its a 16v charger i know its not! It states right on the front that it is a 12v charger. Anyone know what might be up?

well its pretty simple really when you think about it a batter rests at ~12.6 volts when fully charged so you will have to give the battery more than its resting voltage when its low(11-12v) so a battery charger will charge at a higher voltage hence your 16v reading. just wondering why you have them on the charger if they are resting at 12.78? also it sounds like you have the charger turned up if its putting out 16v this isnt good for a battery to get so much power when its already fully charged...
