So I just bought a 12" JL W6 from apsabr on this site a couple weeks ago. According to him, the surround separated from the basket about halfway around the sub. He reglued it using weld-it i think he said which has like 900lb strength per inch or something and can't tell it had anything wrong with it now.

Originally, i planning on putting the sub in a sealed box because i really wanted to get the most out of the sub sound quality wise. Now i am thinking it would be a better choice for me to put it in a ported enclosure so there is less stress on the surround.

What do you guys think? Would it be alright in a sealed enclosure or should I go the safe route and just run it sealed? Thanks.

go sealed, IMHO i think your more likely to tear it in a Ported box because of over excursion... if its going to happen its going to happen, there isnt anything you can do about it

No in a sealed box the box rolls off smoothly and provides a flat response throughout the frequency range. In a ported box, for example tuned to 30hz, play anything under that and the sub will be victim of over excursion, or "unload"

Alright. Thanks for responses. If it wont matter much, i will prolly just put it in a sealed box as I was originally planning.
If you have the space go ported. I just moved my 13w3v3 to a ported box from a sealed box and was absolutely stunned with the amount of SP gained with the same power, plus, if you tune the box low enough you can still get the incredible SQ the W6 line is known for.

they work well in smaller sealed boxes. jl recomends 1.5, i had mine in 1.6. most 10" need that space, but i understand wanting to keep trunk space. my wife *****ed about having more space so the 10w7 came out and a dd1508 is going in.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
