in a properly designed box they should wound the same. The 12's have the potential to be louder but freq response and actual sound should be the same.

Getting SQ right means having flat frequency response, which is car dependent, eliminating the rattles, getting the box right, phase relationship, other tuning, etc. Subwoofer choice itself accounts for like 20% of what determines SQ.
