10" W7 vs two 12" Type X's

Ok this will probably sound really dumb to alot of you but I don't care. I have an on going debate with a guy I work with about this, mind you he's a JL fanatic. He's trying to tell me that one 10" W7 in the JL designed W7 enclosure with a JL slash series 500.1 sounds way louder/cleaner than my two 12" Alpine Type X's in a prefabricated box powered by a PDX1.1000. I know I only have a stupid prefab right now and I know I'm not even giving my subs all they power they need, but really could this honestly be true? I don't care if it's true or not, I just need to know.

Those JL HO boxes are loud, but im not sure if it would be louder than your 2 Type Xs, but it all depends on what vehicles they are in to!

tough call, but if your prefab is ported, its tuned pretty high and should get dam loud playing something in the higher range....should be MUCH loder then 1 10w7 just because of straight cone area. unless the prefeb sucks straight BALLS, it'lll be louder. clan sounding wise, well the type x's are very well poised subs so they should hold their own in sq, but most likely the w7 will sound cleaner because the box is deisgned to do that, for that exact woofer.

to the OP however, i think the type-x would definately have the spl/loud advantage as being a previous w7 owner and hearing a set of type-r 12s... however overall clean sound quality to the w7 hands down

you could ask around here for someone to build you a box, or make plans up that would guide you in building a box.

not that i disagree about the your side of the argument, but the fact is that the w7 is a very efficient sub. JL 500/1 to the 10w7 is the perfect amount to push it, and the HO boxes by JL are actually pretty nice for prefab.

to the me the 2 Type X's do have the cone area, but need way more than 500w a piece to get going, more like 1500 per woofa.....

I'm sure there are a few guys in your area that could help you build a box...just post up a request. Have the box built little bit larger so it's more efficient with the amount of power your using.

being that your subs are in a prefab box and severely underpowered i wouldnt doubt if he took you in both categories.

OK, let's look at this logically... we have:

(2) Type X 12's getting a total of 1000W

vs.

(1) W7 10 getting 500W

If this was sealed vs. sealed, then it should be an open and shut case... (2) Type X by KO.

But, since the W7 is in JL's HO ported box, it does have a chance of achieving higher peak output, but at a narrower bandwidth of frequencies. The Type X's would have the output advantage at all other frequencies, but just not at the frq. where the HO box peaks.

Figure in different installs, different cars, etc. and it gets impossible for us to tell you which setup is louder... we can only tell you which one should louder -- the pair of Type X's.

Regarding which would be 'cleaner'... well, that's a harder one to predict... if both setups are installed competently, there shouldn't be much difference between them in this regard. If the prefab boxes are too small or not braced well enough for the Type X's, then that could very well contribute to any lack of SQ. 'Underpowering' would have nothing to do with this category, and would actually help the Type X's to sound 'cleaner'.
