1 sub or 2 subs?

I have a Ford Taurus with a 12" Resonant Engineering SE series subwoofer, running at 700W RMS in a ported enclosure manufactured to the manufacturer's specs ~3 cubic feet, IIRC. It is quite loud, but I can't help but wonder if I were to get two 350W RMS subs and run them, if they would sound as loud, or louder than my current setup? For comparison's sake, running two 10" or 12" Alpine Type R's at 350W RMS versus my current 12" at 700W RMS.

Any ideas?

I sure as hell don't want to run out and pay for such a costly little experiment if others have already gone down this path, don't ya know...

I think it would be louder... not with the type r's since they would be underpowered but with something else...

I have asked this same ? before and got something like "you're moving more air because you're pushing more sq. feet of area... 2 12's vs. 1 12"

don't know if that helps though...

or if it's accurate...

as far as spl goes, 1 r 12 with 700 should b as loud if not louder then the se, but may not sound as good...

if u wanna consider 2 r's, get a 2k watt amp and dat bish should fly

Theoretically, the gain is 3dB IIRC. I don't think anyone in their right mind would replace and RE SE with an Alpine Type R though.

I feel your pain - I drive a Taurus myself.

$3000 in repairs and counting on a 1999 Taurus with 79,000 miles, after ownig it for 2.5 years!

That and the speaker box only leaves about 12" of storage space in my trunk. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

What about........

(1) 12" woofer with 600 watts RMS ( lets say JL12w7 run off of a PPI A600.2) Vs..... (2) 12w3's run off of a PPI A300.2. Both in spec ported boxes in the same car?? I have less cone but I'm pushing the single at twice as hard. Anyone tried anything like this? Pro's please help

Woah, woah, woah...

(that's three "woah"'s)

I use a ported enclosure now for one sub at 700W which fills almost my entire trunk. Could I go with a sealed enclosure on two 12" subs at 350W each and free up a bunch more space without sacrificing loudness/sound quality?

as do i, mine has been very reliable though but those trunks are dam hard to get loud! do you think taking out the 5x7's in the rear deck would help to get the cabin louder?

I pulled out the rear 6x8s AND that cardboard insulation a long time ago, I don't remember the difference, I do know that you have to cover backside of the rear seat or that yellow padding will powder off and get all over everything. (I used box carpet)

Also, I have put almost no money into my 92 Taurus with 165k miles. Must be a thing about the new ones.

not necessarily. if i go from one XXX 12 to 2 boss 12's, will I gain 3db? Don't think so.
Er, forgot to mention they have to be identical other than the size. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Taurus trunks are hard to get loud in, i took out my 6 x 8 rear speakers too and even with 600 watts goin to my 12' kicker cvr it's not as loud as it was in my 93 grand am, now that car trunk would get loud!
