1 or 2 Subs?

hi everyone,

We are new on this forum and we've got some questions

Only recently we bought a new car (you will laugh, its an old crappy campervan, but perfect to cruise around with some friends) and of course the audio is rubbisch.

We stil had a fairly good HU lying around from Sony with 4X50W all capeble of doing 4Ohms. The main question is if its worth to place two 8ohm subs on one 4ohm channel (we were thinking of Sinuslive Basspumps III, you don't need to make a box around them, just bold them right to the floor) or better to put one good 4ohm sub. Because the campervan is so big, we wanted to have as many speakers possible (more is better!! right?)

Also, does anybody knows something about those Basspups? Are they good? Do they produce a lot of sound, or mainly just bassvibrations trough the car?

For the rest of the speakers we were thinking between coaxals or componentsets. With those componentsets, they deliver the crossover with them, right? Or do you have to buy those separately?

All comments are welcome.

You won't get 50 watts per channel from any head unit, because it's not possible. The reason manufacturers put those claims up is because the output ICs they use are capable of it but the power supplies in the HU are not able to supply the ICs with enough voltage to actually produce the power. In the end, you'll get 16-18 watts per channel from the head unit and that's not going to be enough to move even a cheap sub.

As for the Sinuslive, they aren't subs, they're tactile transducers and in order to get any appreciable effects from them they need to see some real power. They're also pretty sensitive to the mounting location and if you don't get them in the right place, your results will be even worse. They're designed to be mounted to a home theater chair and in a car there isn't really a good location for them.

Component sets are almost always sold with crossovers but I can't say ALL are, because there may be one instance where they're not and that would make such a claim false.

Lastly, more isn't always better. Proper placement of speakers and proper treatment of the area they're mounted will get you much better results than just stuffing as many speakers in the vehicle as possible.

Thanks for the quick responds!!

We already expected that a HU wouldn't have an output of 50W per channel. To bad it's not an option to put the subs in the car.

What would you recommend for decent speakers? I supose it's beter to instal 35W to 45W speakers, since the HU isn't providing enough power. And for decent bass without amp, is there a good solution? We don't really want to install an amp because it's a verry old van (30years) and we are scared the alternator won't pull an extra load (we've already got two batteries to provide electricity to the refrigirator, etc.).
