'05 Silverado - Ugh

There has got to be a way to install a head unit without spending $120 on a wiring harness. I was told there is a way to bypass the RDS/XM crap from behind the seats...? Its on a friends '05 silverado 1500 w/t - the stock unit was just a simple am/fm clock radio - no xm, no cd player , nothin. Please help me in any way you can. Ive tried hardwiring it and splicing in with the original hooked up still but still never got power to the Eclipse head unit. There's gotta be a way! Thanks guys.

Ah...sounds just like the 2003 Cavalier. You need to run a wire to the ignition for it to power up and you will lose your door chime. That's if you choose to splice the wires and not use the harness.

With the Cavalier, using the harness requires keeping the factory unit stored in the car somewhere (and connected), which will allow the door chimes to work.

GM are morons for designing this type of system!!

I did not know that. Every person I know with a Cavalier or Sunfire of this type either have the wires spliced or use the harness with the factory HU still in the car.

Thanx for the info though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Mine is spliced with no door chime, which is great because the bloody thing drove me crazy!!

I believe it is all intentional my friend. It would be easy to run seperate circuitry for everything else but why do it if it could cost you money.

I have no doubt that it was intentional, and they've lost a customer because of it! When I bought my car back in 2003 I was told that there wasn't a harness for it and it was a real pain in the *** trying to get the HU installed. It's in now, but the J Body is such a poor design...I'll never buy a GM vehicle again.

Yeah, that was my understanding too. But according to these guys you can use a GMRC-01 harness and rid yourself of the ugly factory HU. I guess there is more than one type of harness for it and I wasn't advised of the GMRC-01 back in 2003.
