04 grand am headunit replace

a friend of mine's coworker told me that he went to see how much it'll cost to install a headunit in his 04 pontiac grand am. well he told me that the shop told him that he has to get some kind of converter for the aftermarket headunit and that thing costs 100 bucks. i've never heard of anything like that before. but then again i've never worked on a pontiac. so if anyone out there with a grand am. do you need some kind of converter? or is it the same as other headunits, just connect wiring harness and your good to go? thanks

my buddy has a 02 grand am and he didnt need anything like that i know they tryed to sell him a 100 wire harness but all that does when you open your door you here the chime

my bro has an 04 grand am gt and he needs one.....kinda lame... 100 dollars same here, everywhere we go its the same price....its supossed to keep your airbags working and your door chime and other warning lights working in the dash, my brother still needs to get one but he's using a line-out-converter for now

what each guy told me was that you "need" it because it keeps your airbags working and warning lights working like oil light, engine light etc.....but yea to expensive........i want to know where to get one really cheap

Can't you just keep the factory harness connected, and only cut the wires you need and crimp them onto the ends of your stereo's harness?

Your stereo comes with a harness for it, one end that plugs into your stereo, and a bunch of wires hanging out the back that you would normally attach to a harness specific to your car. Can't you just take the stereo harness, eliminate all but the necessary wires (Pwr,gnd, speakers, remote, etc.) and connect just those wires to the factory harness (witout cutting anything else), and leave everything else uncut?

I gotta get one.. I was installing my HU last night and my stock harness didnt have power and the speakee wirs had no signal and all that.. I found out that the new GMs have a databus and you need a interface harness to get the chimes and harness and all that to work.. Im pretty pizzed, but you can get one at walmart for about $40.. so imma pick one up tomorrow... I also been told if you hook the pink wire in the stock harness to the antenna amp wire (blue wire in my case) that it should all be fixed.. imma try em both sunday.. Pm me and i can further explain and provide links to my info
