I want to buy a Pioneer HU for my Cavalier, but sonic electronix is telling me that I need to buy a $60 scosche GM09SR "Select 1999-2005 General Motors Vehicle Radio Replacement Interface with Integrated Chime" for install.
The problem is that, aside from the additional $60 bucks, this thing has horrible reviews! People say that it only works at certain temperatures and usually burns out after a few months. It sounds like an awful investment.
So I have a few questions. Is there any other company that makes a suitable alternative to this product? Or can I bypass this altogether? From internet research, it seems that all this box allows for that the standard $10 harnesses don't offer is chime retention and ignition. I don't care about the chimes, but I want my radio to turn on/off with the car. Is there any way that I could get around this stupid thing?
Lastly, this harness has several RCA cables coming form it, but my car doesn't have a bose system. Will I have to cut those off and strip them to make it work?
Has anybody else had this problem or am I the only one trying to replace the awful factory HU of a cavalier?
Any help would be much appreciated! I've wanted to do this for a long time, but don't know much about car audio, so chime/adapter thing worries me.
