    Suggestions for 1" compression drivers...

I've used the Radian 450s... they come on the back of the 5208 8" coax. Excellent driver... in my tests, they didn't roll off until 22KHz! Of course, you have to build in "tilt EQ" as in any horn/driver combo (the horn/driver naturally has a "tilted" response dropping at 6 dB/oct. until the...

SOLD MB Quart old school 6.5"s and 19mm tweeters FS

For Sale: One pair MB Quart QM120 6.5" midbass drivers and one pair QM19HC 19mm dome tweeters. OLD SCHOOL... the ORIGINAL MB Quart drivers from the FIRST GENERATION. In pretty bad cosmetic shape (dust, minor rust on the basket, etc), but work perfectly. No grilles, no crossovers. I've had...

    Anybody used this midbass

I prefer the paper-cone series (M or C series), but the P-series Vifa stuff isn't bad. Can do a LOT worse for LOTS more money, IMHO... Still have a pair of home speakers I built 17 years ago, with Vifa C17 6.5" drivers. Still hard to find many speakers that sound THAT much better than them...

    Would this be terrible?

I just don't find fixed-frequency crossovers that useful, in real-world terms. Being able to "dial in" the frequency of the lowpass and highpass seperately, is a BIG deal in getting a system JUST RIGHT. Many times, you can even eliminate the need for an EQ, just by setting the crossover in...

Any amp repair techs in the house? Need data...

Trying to resurrect some old fogie amps. Oldies but goodies. 1. an ancient Alphasonik A240B. (1984!) 2. a not-quite-as-old Alphasonik PMA2100 3. a Proton 222... though I think I MAY have that one figured out. (BTW: This ain't the one I got from you, Prowler573! That one's working fine! )...

just what exactly do you guys mean by "old school"?

    1) Had one (ESW154, 15") 2) Infinite baffle/"freeair 3) Very light ("dove"?) gray. Hooked to a bridged Orion 280GX with a custom-made boost filter (tuned to 17 Hz!) it had a MEASURED f3 of 14 Hz in the back of my '84 VW Quantum. And would do 120dB+ at 20 Hz! Those MBs were great drivers...

Name all the old school companies you can think of

I see your Hart Sound, and raise you a Wagner "Super Rock". Bet very few people knew about THAT company. How about Harrison Labs? Still occasionally see one of their woofers or in-line RCA crossover modules around... Don't forget EPI, Concord, Monolithic, Audiomobile, Sanyo (no longer really...

Tubes.....and the Jerks that use them.

Because, among others, the musical instrument industry has proven that NO DSP available now, actually sounds EXACTLY like a tube amp. Seen many a studio pro... recording engineers, etc... marvel at all the crap people buy to EMULATE a tube amp... when they usually could just BUY one in the...

Tubes.....and the Jerks that use them.

Try hooking a transformer to the output, and see what the frequency response is. Good transformers are hard to find, and EXPENSIVE... But worth it, when they're done properly. BTW, even though it's down 1 dB 1t 40KHZ, it's only down 3 dB at 100KHz... so it's not a brick-wall rolloff, by any...

    1984 porsche 944 Transmision

IIRC, some other VW and Audi models share the same transaxle topology as the 944. IIRC, when my VW Quantum GL5 (5-cylinder) had gearbox problems (bearings), the mechanic suggested putting Porsche 944 syncrho disks into it, for durability. If you look at the gearbox housings... other than the...

Tubes.....and the Jerks that use them.

Um, 6SN7 tubes aren't cheap. They are more linear than any other form of analog amplification device, but they're not cheap. 1000VA power transformers aren't cheap. Output transformers with 10-40000 Hz bandwidth (+- 1 dB) and 180+ w/ch output capacity before the onset of saturation (into a 2...

    F*&^%ing burned myself :(

Pshaw. High-bias-class-AB is so 1985. PS Audio hybrid gain-call/PWM amp... 500w/ch, run WIDE OPEN== COLD heat sink after 2 hours. As in still ROOM TEMPERATURE.

Tubes.....and the Jerks that use them.

And as to why a $20000 tube amp? For the same reason they build Ferrari Enzos, Bugattis, Koenigseggs, McLaren F1s and such. Sometimes, you just want the VERY BEST POSSIBLE, no matter what it costs... Regards, Gordon.

Primary source is VPI TNT turntable, with VPI SDS speed-control unit, VPI JMW12.5 arm and Ortofon Jubilee moving-coil cartridge. Secondary source is Creek CD-50 CD player. Speakers, are Martin-Logan Prodigys with twin Descent subwoofers (one subwoofer per channel, stereo bass). I can literally...

MB Quart Component Q series 218CX highs too harsh...recommendations??

One thing to try, is maybe putting a variable L-pad on the Quart tweeter, between the crossover and the tweeter. You can use a dual-gang 8-ohm L-pad (such as this: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-251 ), parallel BOTH the sections (ie, pin 1 of one...
