10” for EDM sub recommendation, lots of questions

It seems like there's disagreement on how important the amp is, so far I'm hearing:
1) budget will do
2) spend the same amount you would on the subwoofer,
3) spend 2x the amount on the subwoofer.

I'll probably go with #2.

I'll listen to a ported box when I can, everyone seems to agree on that. I just got the car today and trunk space looks pretty dismal... may need to design the box to be longer and flatter, with the sub pointed upward, which would take up the whole trunk foot print but then it wouldn't be too tall and I could rest stuff on top of it temporarily. But that's probably a bad idea, huh?

You could downfire the sub or make the enclosure removable

Hello I’m interested in a recommendation for:

  • single 10” subwoofer and amp
  • in Hyundai Palisade (Mid Size SUV)
  • I like aggressive EDM and hip hop
  • I know I want a sealed box
  • I’m shooting for SQ, but I’m not the level of an audiophile, and dont expect to customize EQ settings beyond a basic bass control knob
  • I plan on using the stock infotainment system with active LOC
  • Budget $1000 for sub and amp
  • Goals: enjoy my music by myself when I’m driving home from work to relieve stress. I want a clean, sharp, punchy beat, that quits quickly for the silent white spaces of the music.

The last time I was looking at car audio was in 2014, and I decided on double 12” IDQs powered by an old Nakamichi PA-1500, with a DIY 3/4” MDF baffled sealed box, and to me, that system was an absolute DREAM. I have since sold all that after I had my first child, and low key regret it, but I think that set up is overkill for me now and I’ll need more trunk space.

I’m not loyal to any particular brand, but I definitely appreciate products that punch above their weight. ChatGPT recommended JL audio, but the consensus on this forums is that they are overpriced.

  1. what sub driver and amp should I get?
  2. Has Image Dynamics kept its quality without being overpriced? I was considering IDMax. If that’s solid, should I go for D2 or D4?
  3. Is there any value in getting the sub and the amp from the same manufacturer? In other words, are there combinations of equipment that go well together because they were designed or tuned to work with each other?
  4. What cubic ft of the sealed box should I buy? anyone recommend a vendor? i wont have time to make the box this time around
  5. is it a bad idea to secure fix the box to the bottom of the truck with velcro? i know it’s best to secure it with bolts but i want the option to remove the box easily when i need the trunk space
  6. should i have the sub fire upwards?
  7. is $1000 unnecessary for what I want, considering I’m sticking with a stock head unit and a LOC? do I even need to spend this amount of money or is there a better sweet spot for bang for my buck?

Image dynamics is still a good brand. If you like them, then keep them. They are still owned by the original owners, so quality is still there.

A 10" IDmax sub and an SQ12001 amp would do just fine, but it will push just over your $1000 budget. Is there something just as good for less? Yes, there is. If you want that "slap you in the back of the head" type of bass when the DROP hits, I would go with a 10" Kicker L7S, 2 ohm, and a Stinger MT1000.1 watt amp. That would get you down to about $500. You should have the sub firing backwards. To mount the box, you can use bolt studs with and use quick release hand knob nuts. Most people use ratcheting tie-downs, but I think that looks too ghetto.

I also listen to EDM. That's my main music. In fact, I'm listening to Rammor, right now, and 10 minutes ago, I was listening to Steve Aoki and Griffin.

I'm leaning towards a
Stereo Integrity SQL 12" or SQL 10" (if I can find them)
Kicker CXA800.1 Mono Subwoofer Amplifier

I know everyone suggested 1000W, but given I can only turn my factory stereo to 50% before it starts sounding harsh, I think 800W will be enough.

Does anyone agree or is this sacrilege?

Also, is there a step between an Image Dynamics IDQ and IDMax? Both in terms of power and price?

You will love the sql, just like many others I've heard and had many woofers
The si is a real gem! Perfect balance between sq and output
I think the 12's might be on back order
You can email nick lemons he can give you an estimate when they might come in
The 10's seemed to have been taken off the site for some reason I doubt he only planned 1 batch 🤷‍♂️

I used to run an idq 10 in a civic was never really enough for my edm always wanted more although they sounded just fine
My buddy had the idmax lot more output

Comparing the idmax to the sql
The idmax will come off as more peaky
The sql will perform more linear balanced and play lower

My 15 digs down to 15hz but sounds balanced doung it not in an overwhelming way
I can probably push it lower but never bothered to readjust my subsonic filter
Would probably need 2 of them to have them dig down to 10hz with any real authority and not bottom out
Need to try 🤔

I ran a RF Prime 1200 for the longest time on two RF Punch P3 10's and it was brutal.
I will also add the RF prime 1200 definitely puts out some power. I've been using one in my truck on a pair of cheap old 10's at 2-ohm and it has way more than enough power for a fairly basic system, louder than anyone would really need for music listening, and it's only 800w at the 2-ohms.

I prefer 1000w+ amps, even if you only need 500 to 800w. The bigger amp gives you more clean headroom, which is better for the sub. Can always turn a bigger amp down, but can't get more clean power out of a smaller amp.

These threads are hard to answer, so many variables and never truly know the expectations someone has to recommend stuff.

But, a good enclosure, halfway decent sub(s) on 800 watts or more, should be plenty for enjoying music. It's definitely more than capable of a ton of output.

Deiimos is correct you may not need the 1000 watts if you are fine with 600-800 watts you will be glad having bit more power so you aren't pushing near clipping
And have the dynamic headroom

I've always listened to edm and always use beefy subs like DC or AQ or DD or Fi style woofers. IMO edm works well with more "traditional" SPL-music subs if you're gonna run a single limited space sub and want it to hit hard. Like I had a dd 3510 on 1200w do 135 db or so tuned to 28 hz which is a little low. You mix any traditional just Spl pounder sub with a good box and idk 1000w tune to idk 32 hz or so, may give you the satisfaction you want. The way sealed boxes peak to me ****. I love the lower peak of ported boxes and have it fall off in higher notes some to better blend in when you get to higher bass or mid bass. But you can fine tune ported to get a lot of different results.

Without a doubt!
a ported box with a dd audio ground pounder will forsure sound sweet
Point i was trying to make is the sql is magical and doesn't disappoint in any way
Sealed boxes can be tough to work with in many ways but the sql is perfect for it

I saw Griffin this year, and that show planted the seed that I needed a system again.

Thanks for the mounting recommendations.

Coming from a person who love to crank up his system, while playing EDM music, I would recommend the SQL12. That sub and the Kicker CXA800.1 will make you very happy. I only bought up the L7 because you wanted a 10" sub. The L7 will hit a little harder than a regular 10". I have a shallow L7 in my F150, and people always tell me it sounds like I'm running 2-10's or 12's.

I emailed them and Josh told me the 10s have been discontinued, and the 12s will be available in 2-3 months! I guess they didn't get a ton of volume from the 10s..

I'm not the patient type, but at least it give me time to design the box... Maybe I'll end up making one after all.

Discontinued? Damn
Personally i went sealed as its the preferred method for this model
I used 5/8's Baltic birch plywood
Then i laminated another layer of 5/'8s mdf, might be difficult if you don't have a router with flush trim bit

Otherwise sourcing 1 inch mdf would be ideal. Any thinner you might want to look into getting some bracing in there

If you want to try a ported enclosure
Old_slapper would know more about those, I just know they like to be tuned around 24hz which is a pretty long port

EDM sounds good in a ported box. The downfall is, the box becomes bigger. However, you can get a single 10", in a ported box, to hit harder than a 12" in a sealed. Also, not too many EDM songs go below 35hz. That's because most concert speakers don't handle sub 40 hz very well, so the music producers try to stay away from going lower than that. Yes, I am also a DJ. LOL...
