DTS / 5.1

Anyone know of a double-DIN HU that can decode DTS and/or play 5.1 channel FLAC/WAV ?

I'm on the verge of ripping out the Mark Levinson system in my '08 Lexus IS350, but I really do like the surround from the DVD-A.

Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Seal, Muse, Depeche Mode ... sound incredible in 5.1.

I could just stay stock I guess... but the ML doesn't hit at all, and the current iPod integration (a USASPEC PA15-TOY) ... although wired, is kind of jenky.

Could you please provide more specific details about what you're looking for in a double-DIN head unit?

If you're looking for a double-DIN head unit (HU) that can decode DTS and play 5.1 channel FLAC or WAV files, here are a few options you might consider:

  1. Alpine iLX-107: This unit supports various high-resolution audio formats and offers excellent sound quality. While it’s primarily focused on modern audio formats, check the specifications for detailed support on DTS.
  2. Pioneer MVH-1400NEX: This unit supports FLAC playback and may have options for advanced audio file formats depending on updates and firmware. It’s worth checking if it handles multi-channel audio.
  3. Kenwood DDX9907XR: This is a high-end model with multichannel audio support. It can play high-resolution files and offers comprehensive audio settings.
  4. Sony XAV-AX8000: This unit has good support for various audio formats, including FLAC. Make sure to confirm if it meets your specific needs regarding 5.1 channel playback.
  5. JVC KW-M865BW: This head unit supports FLAC playback, and while it may not explicitly list DTS decoding, it provides a range of modern audio file compatibility.
When considering these models, ensure to check the manufacturer’s specifications or user manuals for confirmation on DTS decoding and specific multi-channel audio format support, as the compatibility might vary by unit and firmware updates.

I'd already consulted the posterior of the Internet, and the "suggestions" were similar, so thanks, but AI obviously doesn't know a definitive answer to whether or not any current models can decode DTS or play 5.1 discrete channels. Apparently AI hasn't filched enough information just yet.

However, any humans with real-life experience in this area are more than welcome to chime in.

Probably Android Auto. Microsoft Carplay. You can either buy the wiring harness from the manufacturers which is more expensive or just order it from your local vendor. Schoesche, Metra-online, are few vendors out there. Video format with the back up camera. 2015 was the release date to these radios. Look up any specific brand you want, then pick up a dash kit with your wiring harness with it.

Most of the Android radios will Decode DTS and you mentioned Channel 5.1. The radios came out in 2015. The technology you mentioned has been on the market a long time. So nothing to this technology. Just pick any radio and it will accommodate the features you have added to the car radio. One more comment then I'm out. That guy whoever said that. PAC TR7, it's a switching device.

I'm looking for the same thing. I have lots of surround music (all ripped to FLAC) that I would love toe play in my 2019 4Runner. Much of it is 5.1, but I have a series of Quadio releases (Quad - 4 channel) which any aftermarket head unit should be able to play, since they all seem to have 4 channels of amplification, if the firmware would actually handle anything over 2 channel stereo. For 5.0, 5.1 or higher, it would need to mix the extra channels into the existing 4 channels of amplification, but that should be pretty easy to do.

Hopefully some (not useless AI) can give us a good answer.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks @marc2112

I appreciate high-quality old school gear.

It appears none of the current double-DINs, with all their 'droid and iPhone integration bells and whistles, can do anything more than hi-res FLAC and DSD in stereo.
