Rockwood amps

I knew this thread had to be old when the name Rockwood was in the title. Not a brand that has been around for a while.

On a bumped thread note, it reminded me to about 23 years ago I got a 4 channel Rockwood Sniper series amp at a thrift store for like 10 bucks. Still have it somewhere, maybe I should slap it in my truck to drive the door speakers. 🥳

Which lead me to seeing if I could find said amp. Nothing like an old ampgut photo. So it is the PA-2090 model I have, about a foot long or so, probably does around 50w per channel real world power. Not totally horrible, but cheap budget ancient style design.

It's got many years of dirt on it, and have not powered it on in a long time.

What do you guys think, should I run my truck door speakers with it at some point? Probably does close to 75 - 100w x 2 bridged. 😄

I have the X479 and for a cheaper priced amp ,Id give it a 7-8 out of 10 rating . I used it for 2) 10" pioneer subs ,Then for a single 15" Lanzar sub. Both setups sound great. Now it's being used for my mids. The year I bought it was around 2000 and it's still going strong .
So, I ended up getting the X479 from my dad who had it passed onto him from his dad. I have never had a system before and am currently wanting to use the X479 with a 12in sub (not sure the brand) in my car which is a Mazda 3i 2008. Would I have to get LOC for my amp to work with my stock radio, and if so which one would y'all recommend? I eventually will want to put in another 12, but for right now it would just be one sub. I also have an Optimus 12-1978 Stereo 7-Band 4 channel equalizer, would that just be another accessory to add with the sub for better control over the sounds, or would it somehow allow me to convert the low-level input to high level input for the radio? or something like that, I'm not too sure if that makes sense.

Yes, you will need an LOC. It will splice onto the speakers (front or rear whichever has easier access). It will then have the RCA outputs that go into the amp. Since you are wanting a sub, I will assume it does not have the upgraded Bose system. In that case a budget LOC should suffice. The LOC below has a gain knob to control the bass output and remote output to turn on the amp when the radio turns on.

I remember Rockwood... We used to joke with people that Rockford and Kenwood started making amps but they were flea market amps all day. We ran them for sure though cause when you are poor you Wood Rock what you could.

Those purple Urban Audio Works amps were another.

Yep I remember those too. Rockwood and Kenford. 200 watt amps with a 1000 watt sticker on them. 8 gage wire and a 25 amp fuse. $100 BNIB from eBay. Chinese crapola.

There was another brand name by the same source that had a German sounding name, but I can't remember it now.

SHELIX, MB Quark, CRAX?
Down here we have Chinese shipping warehouses that sometimes have built in stores selling items from busted pallets. I bought a 1,000 WATTS golden amplifier for ~$45 when in Jr High. The thing was heavy and looked nice. Curiosity had me opening the amp only to find a lead bar bolted to the bottom plate. MF!

I am I the only one who remembers seeing a JI audio subs at the flea market back in the day. And I do mean j i audio. Not JL.
I never saw that brand but I grew up in Pinellas County Florida and we had a big flea market called The Wagon Wheel Flea Market. Man we used to get all the greats, Kraco, Pyramid, Urban Audio, Rockwood, Pyle, Lanzar, Thump (looked cool), Legacy, LA Sound, Profile, Vibe.

My first big stereo ( amps on subs and main speakers) used LA sound amps. Everything in that truck with the exception of the subs came from my local Sears store. Panasonic headunit and Sony eq in the dash. Panasonic door speakers and two 10 inch Rockfords that I bought from a dude I worked with.
La sound amps are cheap for sure. But at the same time, I abused the crap out of them and they never gave up. I ended up selling them after I sold the truck.
