I have 4 sony es coaxial with a Jl jd400 amp.
Should I upgrade my amp or do a sub and amp? The low end is remarkably good for coaxials. I have a kia forte and all the doors are dynamatted.

My concern with a sub is having rattles and vibrations even with dynamatting. Stuff like that drives me crazy. Or will I hear a substantial difference using a high end amp on the Sony es coaxials?

Your coaxials are not intended to handle all of the bass. Changing the amplifier is not the answer.

If bass isn't rattling your car, then you don't have bass. That's just the nature of sound.

Type R is a good sub for what it is, not sure about their prefab boxes and not sure if a single type R is going to hold up well to 1000W, you'd probably do fine with half that power and if you like JL, I'd suggest to take a look into the 500/1, they've been a rock solid amp for a very long time.
