Blew my little Dayton ultimax 8 awhile back and sent it out to someone who can do something useful with it. I’m no subwoofer rebuilder. He said the build quality isn’t very good, and the glue is cheap. Coil is perfect and was never over heated. He sent me some pics after he tore it apart The red arrow is where it failed. Part of the 15 inch sub he is building for me is also in the picture.

No warranty?

since the failure was at the lead on coil to tinsel leads it would require a full dissection To discover it. If they checked the sub the lazy way and saw one coil read 0 chances are they will blame it on too much power when it clearly isn’t the case. The coil windings are perfect, bottom of coil had no signs of bottoming out and absolutely no striations on the coil showing rub. Perfect example of poor build quality. They went a weee bit light on the solder and the wire came off. It’s amazing how easy everything came apart. I’ve taken a max x 15 apart as well and that was the same only the failure on that one was the cone detaching where it was glued to the coil. The other discovery was the coil size, they say it’s a 2.5” coil when it’s actually a 2.38”.

Wasn't sure how PE was about their 5 year warranty but figured like everyone else it would be blamed on "user error".

Well this helps narrow my decision off the UM.. have read a few people complain about the warranty not being honored with dayton subs lately too.

its no secret that burned voice coils are mostly due to user error unless a mistake or blatant lie is told about power handling (think of Rockville lol). Other than that any kind of other failure like glue joints failing, lead wires at the solder joint failing etc should be warrantied without question. A manufacturer should dissect every failure and show it to the one who is asking for a warranty claim this way it’s done honestly. A sub like that which is made in China cost them $35 or less each, it would be in their best interest just to warranty it considering what they charge. Its great to make money but your reputation is everything, without one or losing one, the money no longer comes!

Yeah I had a subwoofer that the spider came unglued on one of two and they blamed it on user error. Then Crescendo not wanting to warranty my UN-10s when the dust caps came unglued on 3 of 4. Turns me off from doing business with them ever again let alone recommending them to anyone.

Dustcaps coming unglued seems to be something that could ONLY happen from bad manufacturing.

if You still have them and the dust caps it’s an easy fix. Of course it’s not a fix you shouldn’t have to do!

I know one of my DC dustcaps came off. I did glue mine back on, it did not look like a pro did it haha.

Is it a carbon fiber or poly dust cap? I only use carbon fiber as it looks sweet and it doesn’t flex at all. As long as you scuff up the back lip then wipe it down, it should never come off. Of course using the proper adhesive is a must too.
