What's a good hu for $200? I seriously don't know... any brand.

I've been reading old threads on here about head units. I'm trying to find a nice single din for under 150$-200$ but if 40 extra bucks gets me something way nicer I'm game. I can dish out more money if I really need to.

My build is nothing crazy, it's a 3-4k daily, but sound clarity is important to me. I'm planning on running two amps. One for mids/highs, and one for sub/subs.

A friend suggested Kenwood's excelon series, he has a X889 that he loves. I'm not partial to any brand. I just want a decent hu.

Thanks

I cant really recommend a brand in particular but when I was actually able to replace my stock HU with an aftermarket one the first thing I looked at was the RCA voltage.
If your running 3-4k I would look for something with at least 4 volt pre outs.
You could always run a line driver but I was never really a fan of them myself.

I picked up a Kenwood bluetooth HD receiver for like $120. 4v pre-outs. I think it's a KMM-BT522HD. I have it running my over 3K daily set-up.

The real question should be DSP or no DSP ? If you have an external DSP doing the processing then alot of the major brand single dins in your price range will be fine.

If your not using a DSP then you will want a single Din that will allow for the front speakers going active (low pass, bandpass, and highpass), time alignment, and 13 band EQ.

No DSP then you really need those 3 way crossovers to run active. If not then your basically going to throw a pair of speakers in your car and pray that the factory crossover box is good enough (95% of the time it's pretty medicore)

IMO, grab a dayton 408 for $150 off parts express, and then run whatever single din with 4v+ outputs and the features you like. The 408 is so cheap it's almost crazy to not run it, and with 8 channels of output it'll be there for any future upgrades you might want to do.

Agreed. Tuning is the most important aspect of the entire build, there's no way I would skimp on it (if you care enough to join a car audio forum then your not going to want a half ass install)

Either do a cheap headunit with the Dayton DSP or do a nicer headunit that has DSP like features.

TC also mentioned that someone else will be doing the install so I would be asking the headunit question to him (what headunit equipment is he actually trained/experienced in installing ?).

Like I said install/tune is the biggest aspect of the system, get with him and see what he can actually do

Thanks fellas, I looked up some dsp's and I figured it would be $300 or more for a decent one. The Dayton 408 sounds like the way to go. I'm adding it to the purchase list. Again thanks everyone.

You'll be happy with it. Some head units have decent tuning capabilities, but not what a dsp has. The nicer HUs let you time align individual speakers, and let you set crossovers for individual pairs of RCAs, but they will usually just have a blanket system wide EQ, and if you wanted to go 3 way active plus subs there isn't much out there. Dsp will let you set custom crossovers and eqs per each individual speaker, plus time alignment. Also has the ability to tune 8 individual drivers. For me, that's a 3 way active front stage plus subs.
