I know cedar is good if you don't want insects eating your wood... like shingles or furniture. I know that lavender puts of something that mosquitoes specifically don't like. I use yellow led lights on my front and back porch. Being that most insects don't or can't see the yellow spectrums of light, they mostly stay away.
