I've got an '01 Intrepid R/T with a gigantic trunk. I am set on 15's, but other than that I'm open to suggestions, I listen to mostly Rap, a bit of alternative and rock.

I've got room for a 3 cubic foot per sub in a sealed box or possibly 2.5 cubic foot per sub in a vented box. I would like each sub to be between $150-$200 and the amp between $250-$350

I was thinking two 15" Kicker CVR's with a Rockford 1200 Watt Prime

or

Two NVX VCW 15's and a 1500 watt rms amp.

Throw any and all ideas my way, thanks guys!!

That's the space for a greT set of 12s in a ported box. You'll get more from a set of 12s in the correct box than a set of 15s in a small box. Just saying. With that in mind. The xfl by American bass. Obsidians or sundowns sa sub all are in the $200 each range new. And will take 1000+ watts rms each. I'd do 2. Xfl 12s on a ppi bk 1800 in a 4^3 box ported at 33 hertz this whole set up with wires should cost you about $850-$875 shipped

if your going to get into this audio stuff, dont cheep out on kickers. ya i have a 12" kicker in my truck for now. but i allready got a ppi 1800 and just ordered a sq 15" d2 sub.

as for the kicker it hits ok but you will want more and for the price there are some good subs.

mylows10, know what hes talking about. he has helped me. thanks buy the way.

No problem man

The Kicker subs you're looking at have less xmax (excursion) than a lot of good quality 8s. That translates to not moving a whole lot of air and that translates to not a lot of SPL.

Cone area is NOT king, as the myth goes and mylows10 makes a good point about the 12s. Smaller subs in the proper amount of volume will pretty much always out perform larger subs in too small an air volume. And to boot, if you go with a sub that has at least 16mm of xmax you will have a setup that will be louder and will hit lower than two CVR 15s.

Those subs, iirc, have 11mm of xmax... which is less than an inch of peak to peak excursion. By comparison, the CT Sounds Strato 12 v2, the Sundown SA-12 or the AB XFLs mylows10 mentioned will all have ~1.5" of peak to peak excursion. That's a lot of difference in how much air is being moved.

These guys are pointing you in the right direction, do yourself a favor and take some of their advice. The only other brand that hasn’t been named that I would throw in the mix is c2 audio and soundqubed, they have some nice stuff at decent prices.

rockford prime amps aren't that great or reliable compared to their higher end lines also. Might want stretch that amp budget to 450 and get some decent amps. Look into soundqubed 2200.1D or crescendo bc2000 and some soundqubed HDS300 12s in a ported box. Dont get 15s in a sealed box, output would not be that great compared to 12s ported and it'll take up a lot of space.

Great advice guys. I never thought about xmax. That's why I've come here...to talk to the pros. So most of you seem to agree that Two 12's is a better idea in a ported box than two 15's in a sealed box. I put together a list of alternate subs and amp that are within my price range that I would like you guys to look over if it's not too much trouble. I searched all night and put this list together, all of the Subs are 15" dual 4 ohm but I would just look at the dual 4 ohm 12" version which will be cheaper in theory which will free up some money for a better amp. The only beast amp I have on the list is that Tarantula 3000.1D but I don't know anything about soundstream, I just head that they're solid.

Anyway, take a look at these and tell me what you think?

Ok all the amps but the ta 3000 are ok I guess. If you look at the soundquebed amps. You'll get a better idea. Same with subs your not thinking like a pro. Your thinking like just because the magazines say these are good. That they are. Well their not only decent sub there is the type r. But again there is better for the money

The problem is that people tend to set their hearts on one particular sub and do whatever it takes to make it work in what might be a not-so-optimal environment. I feel safe in assuming you want 15s because they're feckin' huge subs and 15s will get lower than 12s or 10s, right? I mean no ill will, but I hear this almost daily at work.

Here's what I always suggest:

1. Determine how much space you want to give up in your car for an enclosure and amps

2. Determine how much electrical power you can give to this system (tends to be dictated by your alternator and battery/wiring setup)

3. NOW start researching subwoofers that perform optimally in that environment

4. Find an amp that will do the amount of power required for your sub (the RMS, NOT Peak value), plus a little extra for headroom (never a good idea running amps full tilt all the time...unless you like replacing amps every few years)

That being said, budget tends to win over all (unless you have patience enough to start planning builds a YEAR out from the start). For 150-200 a sub, you've got some pretty killer options. I, like mylows and bbel, would recommend 12s over 15s in your trunk:

Incriminator Audio Lethal Injection (The I series is within your budget, but the LI is just a MUCH better sub...look for used deals to fit it in your budget)

Incriminator Audio | Performance > Hype

DC Audio Level 2 (just a hair over budget, but will take the CVR's lunch money)

dcsoundlabs.com - dc sound labs Resources and Information.

Obsidian OA12 (my first personal recommendation based on budget. No need for haggling or finding a used deal to fit it in budget)

Obsidian Car Audio

SSA DCON (KILLER budget sub...since the redesign, they do exceptionally well in both sealed and vented enclosures and about 400W per sub)

Sound Solutions Audio - Quality Car Audio Subwoofers

Sundown SD-2 (sealed) or SA (ported)

Welcome to Sundown

Now, talking amps, I recommend one MAJOR point. Look used. Looking new will always either cripple your budget or limit your options and, in the end, you'll have to settle for less. Provided you choose well-built used gear, it will last well more than 20 years. Take a look at eBay (for examples, not purchase) and you'll see old-school Orion, Autotek, Soundstream, Zapco, and a slew of other brands that would be WELL beyond what you could afford had you bought them new, but are now anywhere from the $100-300 range. I just noticed today an Orion 2250GX for about $400 that would THRASH any of the options mentioned (in a good way).

Long story short, a little research goes a LONG way. Sites like this, DIYMA, MAF, CACO, and the SSA forums are literally chock-full of all the info you'll need to realize why we feel the way we do about Best Buy/Walmart brands.

Well, you guys are helping me start to "See The Light". I've learned a lot already. I just finished checking into the links you posted above and think I really like the Obsidian and the DC Audio Subs.

DC Audio Level 3 12" Dual 4 Ohm 900RMS/1800Max $190

DC Audio Level 2 12" Dual 4 Ohm 600RMS/1200Max $155

Obsidian Audio 12 v3 Dual 4 Ohm 600RMS/ $123

American Bass Xfl1244 1000RMS $200.00

Those have excellent price ranges for me!

Even this Amp seems like a great price for a NEW option...

PPI BK1800.1D |700x1@4ohm|-|1100x1@2ohm|-|1800x1@1ohm| $180.00

Maybe I could do 2 Obsidian Audio 12 v3 and that PPI Amp in a 2.5-3 cuber-per-side box. I don't care about trunk space, I can throw my golf clubs in the back seat, lol! I have already done the Big 3 Upgrade and had a Hifonix BRZ2400.1D pushing a 15" Mofo. I thought I blew the sub so I threw the sub away only to find out a few months later that the amp was bad, when we hooked it up in a friends Tahoe and it started on fire ooops. Ive always used Brutus amps, and after owning 3 of them and having to send all 3 in for repairs I'm done with them. So I'm ready to branch out, that Precision Power amp seems like a good choice actually. I really liked the American Bass Subs too. The funny thing is, I've never heard of any of the subs and amp that you all have mentioned, crazy. You usually buy the name brand stuff because it's proven it's worth it, I'm finding that it's the other guys worth investing in. Thanks for opening my eyes here!

If this setup will make me crosseyed and disturb the peace for up to a mile away then I think it sounds perfect for the $$
