Zed Draconia vs Sundown SAX-100.4

i remember hearing of an amp having a dac i thought
Guess not, im retard and will gokill myself now

:-(

Mike

That statement was a generalization that encompassed 99.999% of amplifiers.

There are only 3 amplifier lines/models (I can think of) that have a DAC. Two are the Zapco DC and Kicker SX series as they both have built in digital sound processors (DSP).

The last one is the Phoenix Gold Octane-R 5.1MT, which had a built in 5.1 decoder & DSP (and actually had a fiber optic digital input).

So no, you're not a tard.

But those are by far the exception, not the rule //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

o ok. woho im not the villiage idiot :). i remember a high end amp had one soo i was curious.

thx for informing me squeak. u definately qualify as 1 of the most respected people me in the other post i saw.

Mike-

All so called digital amps have DAc's, one that comes to mind is the cadence amadeuse series.
The only time an amplifier will have a DAC is when it is converting the signal to digital....which very few amplifiers do.

While not being overly familiar with the Cadence...I see no reason it would switch the actual signal over to the digital domain. All of the controls are analog. They call it a "digital" amp, but never really explain what it's doing that's "digital".

I was wrong, Some digital amplifiers are hybrids (*the case for cadence), as in they have analogue inputs, so they transform it from analogue to digital then back to analogue.

A true digital amplifier wont have a dac. It basically outputs the digital signal to the speaker and it would appear like the speaker then becomes the converter. I think those are pretty rare, the norm is more of the hybrid type that uses a DAC.

Unless I missed something with the Cadence I see no reason for it to transfer the signal from the analog domain into the digital and then back again. I really have serious doubts that it does. Why they claim it's "digital" I have no idea, but I seriously doubt it has any relation to switching the signal itself into digital.

A speaker can ONLY accept and will only respond to an analog input signal.

It would do absolutely nothing with a digital input. There's not even a way to connect a digital signal to a speaker.

I like Zed amps //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Either choice is a good one.
I own a Zed and I agree. The sundowns are nicely priced amps that seems to do well on power. I am considering adding a sundown or two to the mix.

Have we had any third party testing on the 100.2 or the 100.4? I know Loyd tested the 1500D (with nice results).

Zed Audio has some third party testing listed in their "Testimonials" section. The seem to do about 125+% rated power at right under 1% THD at 4 ohms per channel.

There has not been any third party power testing yet, although I would certainly welcome it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I do have some listening testimonials if you look around on ROE. Nick over at SI also runs an SAX-100.4 on his component speakers.

I would agree that it is pretty sutpid to have that, but a moderator who works at Cadence said it had a DAC.

Here is a reference on another web site talking about amplifiers that have analog inputs and a DAC, he doesnt give examples however the fact he mentions them means I am not talking out of my ***. They exist.

This is what is called "hybrid" digital amplifiers.

Not totally true, as you can see from the link below.

You might find that its a play in words seeing as how the PWM is analog and the result if still analog, but they say the speaker is "turned on and off"... and of course you send the amplifier a direct digital signal.

The big thing in true digital amplifiers is there is no conventional DAC along the signal chain.

If oyu dont fee like reading all of that skip to the part of "The long and short of it" for a quick explanation. Although a lot of the article is pretty interesting.
