Your "loud" volume?

Get out of here with that shit. If you don't have any information to contribute, don't post.

Over 1k posts in 2 months, I guess I just don't grasp the concept of this forum yet.

On my Pioneer 880 I do 30-35 with the windows up and 45-50 with the windows down to cruise. Two different audio settings of course

Normal listening to me is 12-20/35 on an Alpine 9887, loud is 25-35. I can take it to 35 without hearing any distortion.
When does yours seem to start getting dynamic (for lack of a better word)?? Mine seems to come alive around 16. I can crank it to 32 or so I think before it seems to get any distortion but the couple of times I was listening to it at 24 for an extended time I started to get an interesting smell that seemed to be coming from the speakers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif So I don't usually turn it up that far.

I know exactly what you mean, mine seems to come to life at around 16-19 depending on the source and music, the change from 0 to 10 is not too much, but from 16 to 20 is like ridiculous. And the smell may have been simply over powering, not clipping/distortion //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I know my MT gets a bit stinky if I play songs with high frequencies for an extended time. (I'm not sure why, but it just doesn't like high frequencies. It can play 30 notes all day at a high power, but those highs kill it)

Do all HU's have this dynamic point in the volume range? Or is it just our 9887's? I've been wondering, haha. I don't remember a point like that when I had my x692 in, but I didn't have a sub so idk.

I run a JVC AR8500 and found that the pre-outs clip around 43/50.

I set my gains at 40/50 (10/12 for sub out) and only push 40 on low recorded songs. If I'm listening to rock, my usual max is 37 and for rap or something bass heavy, the sub level goes from 6/12 to 10/12 and the volume goes to about 39 maybe 40.

How do you like that JVC? I've heard a few people talk about them but never played with one in person

It's wonderful. The only things I have against it are the parametric EQ (I want more than 3 bands on a high end unit; the fixed Q eq helps better for my car where I need a ~10dB cut around 3-5khz) and the SD reader doesn't like micro SD cards or any SD card that is 2 gigs or larger. My 1 gig SD card works fine but my 2 gig only kind of works and my 2 gig micros usually give a "read failed" error but sometimes work. By "kind of works" for the 2 gig, I mean that it will usually not give a read failed error but will just not see new stuff I put on it sometimes. I think 1 gig just might be its max but I still can't complain as the sound quality on mp3 SDs is a little better than burned mp3 CDs and I can add or subtract files on the fly without having to burn a new CD.

The sound quality is excellent (right up with with my Eclipse 8445) and the user interface is about as perfect as I could ask for; it only took me about 1 day of use to fee like I had it mastered. I never had that lost feeling like I would get with Pioneer or Alpine units' (especially alpine) user interface. It feels well built and solid and I haven't had it do anything crazy. I bought it used for about $225 I believe and think it was well worth the money as I couldn't find anything else in the price range with the features it has.

Had I known about this unit, I would never have bought my Eclipse 8445 (which I loved as well). But then, this unit would have been stolen in place of the 8445 haha.

Lol. So you're saying that the 2 gig is too large for it to read? or am I misunderstanding you? I'm pretty basic when it comes to headunits, I just want to know if theres one out there that would be worth me letting my p880 go. Do you have any pics of it on hand?

I don't have any of mine, but here is a thread from a guy I almost bought mine from here:

http://www.icixsound.com/vb/showthread.php?t=37547

I would say that 2 gig is too large as mine doesn't work 100% with it but it will still work, I just can't put 2 gigs of music on there and have it play every folder. All micro SD cards I have tried don't work 100% either and will sometimes randomly get a read failed when switching tracks or they will just say read failed when inserted.

The 880 is just as powerful as the AR8500, if not more so (dual 32 band EQ can be very powerful). I don't think there would be a noticeable difference once everything is tuned and adjusted properly between the two except the volume progression and user interface. I was about to purchase an 880 but the user interface just pissed me off and I have never liked the non-linear nature of Pioneer's volume level increments; they all seem too bass heavy at low volumes and then the highs get louder faster than the bass at higher volumes -- that just makes no sense at all to me but some like it.

Cool, I wasn't sure if that dynamic point would change according to gain settings or if it was a sorta set point where the HU picks up its game. I don't remember anything similar happening in other HU's.

Yea the smell was new to me so I really didn't know exactly what it was but thats what I figured it was. The comps are being run active off a Sax100.4 so I guess thats about all it takes to get em heated up. Sounded oh soo good until I got that smell too lol. Was listening to Kansas - Carry on Wayward Son //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif (yea I know lol) at around 24 and it sounded great, then about half way through I got that smell lol.

Seems like on content that is near the 0db level, greater than 67/80 starts to clip on my eclipse. On lower volume content, maybe 70/80. Some decks clip their preouts earlier than others...i don't think i'd buy one that clips at only 60% of it's max volume. Reeks of shitty components.
