first, i have a kicker l5 15" sub powered by a hifonics brutus bx500d mono block amplifier. its wired @ 1ohm so its getting the 500rms juice.

specs of sub:

S15L5

Outer Frame Diameter, in (cm) 15 5/8 (39.7)

Nominal Impedance [Zn], ohm [per coil] 2 or 4

Power Handling Watts, Peak (RMS) 1500 (750)

Sensitivity [sPLo], dB @ 1W, 1m 88.8

Effective Frequency Range, Hz 18-100

Mounting Depth, in (cm) 8 1/2 (21.6)

Resonance Frequency [fs], Hz 23.4

Equivalent Volume [Vas], ft3 (L) 7.93 (224.67)

Net Displacement, in3 (cc) 3757 (229.3)

Moving Mass [Mms], oz (g) 11.54 (327.2)

Magnet Weight, oz (kg) 114.64 (3.25)

here are the features off the mono amp:

subsonic: 15hz-35hz

bass eq: 0-18db

low pass filter: 35hz-250hz

phase: 0-180 level: 9v-0.2

my sub is in a vented sub enclosure (see attached pic for detail) but i do not know the specs of it. i just needed a box great for bass so i bought this one. the music i listen to are hip-hop/techno/trance/rap, if you were in my situation, how would you set your amp to sound its best and not harm the equipment? or explain how each of these amps features work and examples of each?

thanks all

I would probably use the amplifier gain setting tutorial in the amplifier section //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif (or search button) read that thread. Once you read the answer to the formula is 500*1=500 square root of that is about 22.36VAC(might want to have someone double check that). Sorry too tired to explain it all. But read that and you're set.

I notice a trend here, most "popular" amps end up like that. Even the refurb Vipers have had trouble doing their rated power.

subsonic: 15hz-35hz
Where to set it depends on the tuning frequency of your enclosure

bass eq: 0-18db
Leave it set at 0

low pass filter: 35hz-250hz
Depends. Just turn the knob till it sounds best with the rest of your stereo. Should be somewhere between 50hz and 85hz

phase: 0-180
Try it both at 0 and at 180, leave it whichever way sounds best

level: 9v-0.2

hey all, thanks for the replies. i read that gain tutorial thread, still dont know how to add it up... since im so horrible at math //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

but im going to email the ebay seller who sold the box to me and ask what the tuning frequency is. but is there a possible way to figure out by just examining the box?

the test track i used was "mircale - bounce (remix)"

As was mentioned...you'll want to set it to 22.3V

Well, the best way would be to measure the exterior dimensions of the box (the whole box, even the port). Then, measure the interior of the port (Length, Width and Height). Give us those dims, as well as the thickness of wood used and someone on here should be able to work backwards and figure out the tuning frequency.

the port is 3/4" mdf wood. its about 15" deep, 3" wide, and 20" long in length. its pretty much like a brick wall inside the box with a 3" space and 18-20" length gap at the very end of the box.

any guessimate on what tuning freq i may stand at?
