I could care less really, I care exactly as much as I did when I had groans. I do think it's funny that system is gone though.

Likes and Thanks are not the same in my mind, or many others it would seem. I give a Like if I find something amusing or funny, generally it's something I actually like.

A Thank is given if I find something useful or informative, and I am Thankful for that post.

Hopefully your tech guy can at least get the Thanks imported back in, those were actually a good indicator of someone's helpfulness.

Well... from your point of view I can see how you would think so. I know myself and many others found the Thanks system rather informative. Likes and Groans were pretty nonchalant, but from my experience, Thanks were used considerably more conservatively.
