if you had £300 to spend on a unit which would you buy?

SQ is most important factor.

Must be MP3, CD, aux in or IPOD compatible.

Fairly simple design, nothing too flash.

(Maybe something coming soon, or out now which is slightly over budget might be appropriate)

so you best unit for £300 is?

nicolaw - I don't know what kind of prices/brand availability you have there in the UK but stateside $520+ USD will buy you one heckuva head unit.

Do you have a certain brand that you are looking at or just suggestions overall? I'm admittedly a Kenwood fanboi and I've been running their higher-end stuff for several years now without having reason to regret my loyalties....The Kenwood eXcelon 25th Anniversary XXV-01D or the eXcelon KDC-X889 are both pretty outstanding units. The soon-to-be-released eXcelon KDC-X890 looks (on paper at least) to be just as good as the 889 it is replacing.

Shoot - in your stated budget you shouldn't find it too difficult to find not only what you need but considerably more than you want probably....
