why would you coat the outside of the box with resin out of curiosity

My guess... Its easier to paint and make it look like the paint finish on your vehicle's body, not just painted wood....

for MDF, fiberglass resin is one heck of a "primer"... you can't really paint MDF straight up and get the same finish... it'll soak up pretty much whatever you throw on it.
