WTF is up with these alien spaceship looking subwoofers? I want a classic sub!

what about these bad boys from focal. The magnets on these things boggles my mind. I havent been able to get over this design since the first time i saw them at ultimate electronics. I wonder what difference is made in the use of a lot of little magnets as opposed to one large one. The cone doesnt look too alien though.

Can't remember the shops name...They had those subs(In Phase), along with some hifonics, some other weird german crappy subs...they also had SPL Dynamics too.
Those SPL Dynamics are sexay though! Very expensive too...but man they looked beefy.
crappy and German usually dont go together when referring to speakers ect what brand were they?

You're kidding, right?

IMO, it is mainly all about the newer generation wanting the 'flash & bling' factor.

On the Pioneer flat subs, the surrounds are designed that way to minimize the height of the surround while maximizing excursion.
The surround is like the V-Flex on my old school 15" Cerwin Vega 'Vega' series from the late 90's.

Taken from my manual:

VEGA-Flex Suspension-

"The POWER ''V" center corrugation allows extraordinarily long throw while creating a "spring-like" suspension remaining constant over the entire range of movement of the speaker cone. The V-Flex suspension mechanically resists lateral "cone drift" for perfect pistonic movement of the cone; a distinct advantage particularly in high power applications."

*Cerwin Vega started that double bump suspension surround design.

Isn't it pretty crappy how visuals take over as time goes on, and it ruins sound?

In car audio, speakers visual looks go up (at least to the simple minded, humans are attracted to things that are shiny like those Kicker subs on the first post of this thread), and the quality of car audio goes down.

Metaphorically, in the music industry, the visuals go up. Better looking stars. Super hot young broads, dudes that look like Uncle Jesse from Full House, all these eye candy jerks have taken over the industry, and the quality of music has plummeted.

What's with humanity, what makes us adapt to visual over sound? Why do simpletons come first, and get catered to?

dang dude thats pretty deep if ya think about it an its so true too they make every thing now a days to look awesome like its the best thing you can possibly get...BUT they just do that make more money cuz they figure that people will wanna buy something even more if it looks like its worth more but truly in the end there lowering their quality in equipment. but their prolly makin more money then ever just cuz of all that ya know? you never really get your moneys worth anymore when you buy somethin

Blaupunkt maybe? Not quite sure whether they still make subs or not. Don't know much about them after the year 2000 lol
I know a guy who has a 4 12" Blaupunkts. He had 2 of em in his truck at one point i think he sold them too but the other 2 are in a special box made by the same company and the box is tuned to the perfect frequency i think he said his dad paid around 500 or 600 bucks for all 4 plus that box but i heard the 2 he had in his truck before he sold em and man did they hit it was like OMGAWW lol extreme quality right outta germany for ya right there

Guess I shouldn't have said "Crappy german subs"...I'm sure they weren't made in Germany, just sold at the shop. They looked like your typical pryamid/pyle/road gear crappy subwoofers...Can't remember the name of 'em. If the dollar to euro rate wasn't so shit, I'd go get me some SPL Dynamics or GZ Nukes while here!

I run a Blau sub once in a while. It replaced an IDQ12V2, and it was chosen due to its sound quality and fairly high sensitivity. The driver can be had for ~$50. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

FWIW, it can hit like OMGAWW with a very small amplifier, to boot.

The gaps between the magnet actually create a pretty effective means for voice coil cooling.
