The most racist people I have ever encountered (in my own life) have been black. I don't know of any other group/community that views everything through the lens of race to the extent of the black community...EVERYTHING is somehow racist...and always somehow they're the victims.
Yes America has a tarnished history when it comes to how we've treated VARIOUS ETHNIC GROUPS throughout the years...but we've also gone to great lengths to atone for those sins and change.
There is not a single law that can be written to change how people feel about/perceive each other...there just isn't. All a government can do is create a FAIR and EQUAL playing field in which EVERYONE has an equal chance at happiness. We've already done that...some might say we've actually gone beyond and actually given advantages to certain groups/communities (affirmative action etc).
I think it's odd that other communities (Asian, East Indian, Muslim, South American) have found ways to be quite successful and have flourished in our society...yet this one community seems stuck in this 'we're oppressed and it's all whitey's fault' mode. EVERYONE is/has been discriminated against at one point or another. It's sad and sick that identity politics is such a big thing these days.
The truth is there is NO grand white supremacy conspiracy...there just isn't. That's not to say there aren't idiots that promote that sort of thinking...but as a rational person those notions should be dismissed as fringe. There will always be extremist for whatever cause/race/issue whatever...but by and large most folks of any community just don't agree with that sort of division.
Some of the most hateful people I have met have been 'not-white'...but also some of the most beautiful and kind people I have encounter were also 'not-white'....and vice-versa. The bottom line is you CANNOT judge a book by it's cover...and that goes both ways. The popular narrative these days is that 'people of color' are somehow being oppressed by 'white people'...this is just NOT FACTUALLY ACCURATE. Look at the major black communities (Chicago, Detroit, Philly) that are absolutely dismal...who runs them?! Who has run them for DECADES?! Predominantly black (almost completely Democratic) leaders....Local officials,Mayors, Governors, Councilmen/women in most cases folks of color. How can that be pinned on 'whitey' and some grand conspiracy....
What seems crazy to me is that the blame gets placed everywhere except where it should be...ON THE INDIVIDUAL. It seems like facts no longer matter only narratives...'Hands up, don't shoot' NEVER HAPPENED...overwhelming evidence confirmed that...but it doesn't matter...what mattered is it was another opportunity to blame 'whitey' for something. The 'I can't breathe' choke-hold thing was also BS....the headlock was used to take the guy down and was released when the guy was on the ground and subdued...the medical report showed that the guy was overweight and in poor heath and the stress of the incident caused a heart issue leading to his death...it had nothing to do with the 'choke-hold'. Also it had nothing to do with race...the supervising officer on scene was a black female...but yet the narrative was 'white cop chokes and kills black man for NO reason'.
Don't get me wrong...there are other examples that SHOULD NOT be dismissed...the gentleman that had the broken neck in the back of the police van (Freddie Gray I think was his name)...he went into the van OK and came out with fatal neck injuries?! That can't be ignored or dismissed...something was clearly fvcked up there...but again NOT a racial thing 3 of the 6 police charged in that incident were black.
Identity politics and the racial blame-game really makes me sick and makes me really sad/scared for the future of our country. I have gay, straight, trans, white, hispanic, asian and Indian folks in my family by blood and through marriage...I remember my grandfather made a comment a long time ago that our holiday dinner table looked like a meeting of the UN...I was too young to understand at the time but he said it with pride. Racism will only end when people (of EVERY color) stop viewing things through a lens of color.
We're all just people...every individual is different...regardless of what we look like. I really hoped I would see a day when this kind of division was no longer an issue in our country...that was one of the reasons I voted for Obama...I thought I would be cool to show the world community that we had evolved beyond our bigoted past...sadly that has been proven to not be the case.
If folks want to protest racial injustice...fine...but when you do it during the national anthem you should expect some push-back...it conflates the issue.
