Would Mach 5 15" have bad SQ for heavy metal?

Well the more I research the more my mind changes. Interested in the Mach 5 MAW 12". I mainly listen to Heavy Metal, followed by some Alternative (NIN), and then some oldies.

I was looking at the 12" because I heard 15" woofers don't have the best SQ. And I wasn't sure how heavy metal would sound with 15". Maybe if it was a sealed box?

Anyways I can get the 15" for only a few $ more than the 12".

So do I go with the 15" or will that not sound as well as the 12" for my musical preferences?

Thanks

Also can you get IA 187's anymore? I've read abit about them, but can't find them anywhere online (froogle, ebay, google).

Also had my eyes on:

Diamond D1 (it's cheap)

Memphis 15 PR

All 12" BTW, believe all DVC also.

Read all the budget subwoofers posts, although some where pretty old.

The MAW15 would be just as fine as the MAW12.

If you can get your paws on a 10" or 12" Assassin, I'd say go for it and put it in a 0.9-1.3cf sealed. My 12 does beautifully with heavy metal and hard rock.

But my oh my that TC-9 looks enticing.

What kind of amp/power do you have to work with?

I don't yet. I was picking the Sub first and then looking at amps.

I was actually looking at a cheap Kenwood KAC-9102D. I was looking at that for other subs though. Wanted to make sure they had enough power and I don't have much cash now. I will have enough cash in about a month or so. So if I had to get a good sub for a good price and let it sit for alittle while, I'm willing to do that.

I have about $140 and would like to buy a sub with it before I blow it.

Thanks for reply

You should have better SQ from a 15" sub than a 12", because you can get the same output with less cone movement and distortion.

A sealed box would probably be your best bet, but a well designed and built low-tuned ported box can sound really good and keep up with metal too.

No the Kenwood is new. That's just what I was looking at. I don't have tons of money to throw down for this stuff right now. Heck I may not even have enough for kenwood and just have to wait a month or so.

That's why I thought TC-9's seemed like a deal. Thought it was the best sub from what I posted. But I honestly don't know. Is an M5 is better than the TC-9?

Like I said I don't have alot to spend so I'm trying to get best deals and get cheapest, best quality equipment that I can afford.

My Price range right now would be =

In a month or so hoping I could spend $250 on an amp.

Thanks for replies

*EDIT*

I was going to use http://www.reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html and build my own ported box.

probably around 35Hz, not sure how big. But really not sure what'll make my type of music sound better. Like I said I listen to Heavy Metal, but wife likes NIN. So I need my good fast deep bass and she just needs some good deep bass. Thanks again

I have a Kenwood 9152D and it works. Never shuts off on me and doesn't give me problems. If you're on a budget, its a great amp.

Thanks man, that's cool. I've read alot about Kenwoods, both good and bad. But I'll take my chances, you know?

But I'm more interested in the subs to get.

TC-9 for about $135-140

D6 for about $120

M5 for about $95

Anyone? Need to talk to wife tonight about it and trying to make sure I know what speaker I am getting so I know how much to tell here *gulp*. I'm looking more for best price with best performance. They are all in my price range. So what to do?

Well I couldn't wait and went with the TC-9 figuring it was probably the best deal. But what the hell do I know? Not much about car audio that's for sure.

Now to figure out the box and amp. I'm so excited. This is my first sub, I can't wait.

Hope I made the right choice. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Any suggestions on box type and size for my styles of music?

Sealed would likely give you more accuracy, but ported enclosures designed and built with care can come close. I'd stick with sealed and keep everything simple for now.

Keep it around 1.4cf as per TCSound's recommendations.

As for an amp, look for something that'll pump out between 800-1500W RMS at 2 Ohms.
