Wood Beauty Panel - What cheap wood to stain to look good?

Going to make a beauty panels to cover the back of my box, but ive never done any stain work before, what kind of wood/sheet can I buy to stain and cut cleanly?

Id like the wood to have a nice looking grain to it, my car comes with factory wood grain with darker accents and a dark brown with slight red colour in it. Is there a best stain to use? Is it hard to stain and do I have to clearcoat?
