Wireless router question

I just moved and got hooked up with 8 mg cable internet If I plug my computer directly to the cable modem, I get right at 8. But when I hook it to my wireless router, it slows to around 2.5 according to a speed test site. I have hard wired my desktop off the router, and use the wireless for my lap top. Not much of a diff between the two. Is my router a POS or is something not set right? It is a cheaper Netgear. Thanks for the help!

Did that. Didnt help. I had to reset and reset up the router when I changed servers. I couldn't do shit till I did. I have an "excellent" signal. I know that it has to be the router because when I connect either of the computers directly to the cable modem I get full speed.

Check to see what your MTU on the router is set to.

Im guessing you dont know what that is so check this link out

You lose some bandwidth due to overhead if you are going wifi, but not sure if you are supposed to lose that much.

MTU is set at 1500
