Wire size argument

Okay, so last year when my dad and I were hooking up my (first) subs, he thought my 8 awg wire (battery to amp)was ridiculously large. He plays guitar, and his argument is that he is running more watts through his amp, with a smaller cord which he plugs into and outlet, and it gets a ton louder. I don't really have a good point on why you need such big wires ie 4 or 0/1 gauge. He is pulling more power through at outlet, out of a smaller cord.

tell him car audio is different than guitar amps. his sons SAFETY is on the line. Does he want you to run insufficient wire and have your car catch on fire? it wouldnt hurt to show him some pictures of melted wire either, heres one i found. im sure someone here has some more

Yeah, first off AC and DC are completely different animals. Second, as mentioned, your safety is on the line, and he should understand this. 8awg is still very small for car audio. Tell him to install a 2k watt system with 10awg in his vehicle //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Comparing AC voltage to DC voltage already shows he doesn't have a clue. Do not take any electrical advice from that guy ever.

As a weird historical note, Thomas Edison pushed for DC power distribution, and NYC still had a working DC power system until only a couple of years ago //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the AVIC was a tad more complicated to wire not to mention stuffing it in a smallish stereo hole. thanks for advice.
