Wire info

I just switched out my crappy 12 gauge speaker wire that i had to my sub with 8 gauge power wire that I had. Is this a good idea or bad idea? Im not sure if there is a difference between 'power wire' and 'speaker wire'? Or is it just called that because of the size.
