240-280Z were the sports cars, decreasingly so with each new model. The 280ZX was a velour abomination that was heavier than any Z ever was, and the least horsepower until they Turbocharged it. The “X” stood for “luxury”. Unless you had the very first run (1979 - no T-Tops), you REALLY owned a dog.
The only thing that made the ZX any better was the size, which made it a little easier to drive due to reduced trailing throttle oversteer (same with the early 2+2 Zs, but a lot of them were automatic).
Did you have a turbo?
I had a 77 280. Stock except for front spoiler, 1/4 coil cut off the springs, polished & ported head, header, 2 1/2” exhaust, steering wheel. Fun little car. Except the AC was dead. Got T-boned.
Replaced it with a 79. That one got leather seats from a Mitsu Conquest, springs, header, exhaust.
Not quite as fun.
