JAN 30th is the new date

Finally, Adam and Jamie carefully navigate their way through a myth that has baffled everyone from web bloggers to pilots. If a plane is traveling at takeoff speed on a conveyor belt, and the belt is matching that speed in the opposite direction, can the plane take off? Extensive small-scale testing with a super treadmill and a nearly uncontrollable model airplane don't completely resolve the myth, so our flight cadets supersize the myth with help from a willing pilot and his Ultralight flying machine.

Finally. We will see. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

***UPDATE***: http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=276932 Poll only thread, no discussion.

***UPDATE 3***

There is a preview of the show to air, and an official apology from discovery channel about the misinformation about the date of the show.

The conveyor belt is a long tarp they tied to the back of a truck.

I really want to see how they do this

It wont do anything, unless they can rotate the turbines like a harrier //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

if the plane is travelling at 200mph in both directions it cant take off as there is no overall air speed
The wheels have nothing to do with taking off.

they are using a prop plane. I think thats what ultralight means. Correct me if im wrong.

but vote, in the poll.

My dad is an aerospace engineer and when I asked him this question he looked at me like I was retarded...

The plane will move forward and then take off...

I dunno about the plane in this experiment tho who knows what they actually plan to do...

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/word.gif.64b12e39f936af3b4fff38a1c0bd0244.gif This was my understanding of the situation.

and //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/word.gif.64b12e39f936af3b4fff38a1c0bd0244.gif thats why i put the they may mess this experiment up. That would cause the internet to implode.

How can lift be created if air isn't going across the wings?
No it will not take off, but we won't concretely know because they will botch it.
I think I see where the misunderstanding is. The treadmill is *supposed to be* runway length(we will see how they do this). Its not a standing take off. I think this is why the harrier comment was made.

Still the plane won't travel down the treadmill. It will remain stationary since the treadmill is going in the opposite direction the plane is trying to go. With out forward movement, no air goes across the wings. It makes no sense whatsoever to me.

I hate when people cite MythBusters to me as being their source of knowledge. I can't remember watching an episode where more conclusive tests couldn't have been done.
