Damnit, I saw that snoopdan was talking about 3g's on craigslist and confused me, but still the GPS won't work unless he gets wireless coverage. I've tried, take out the sim card and disconnect from wifi.... they use triangulation from wireless antennas to locate phone and not actual GPS signals like traditional GPS navigation units use.

With the new iOS 6 firmware (coming fall 2012) the Maps app has been completely redone by Apple which has removed Google from the picture completely.

I never knew the caching trick, seems like a pain in the ***, but I guess it will work if you can plan that far ahead.

yeah.. the GPS antenna is stand alone from data antennas.. the only reason you need data for gps navigation is to load the maps from the internet. But with maps being preloaded now (not on data service) you will be able to use your GPS antenna on the maps.

just like a GPS in a car.. there is no data connection, just a GPS antenna which is used on preloaded maps.
