Why the 04/05 XXX is so Badass??

That was my next guess. That something having to do with money, on probably Adaire side since they hold the patent. Do the Brahma's have the XBL too?
The reason the Brahma's have the XBL^2 motor technology is because Adire is owned by the man who invented it...

Good ole' DW licensed the technology to RE / AscendantAudio

edit... was owned...

So since Adaire is no longer in business, "DW" still holds the patent and won't let anyone use it? Is this why we no longer see the technology used today, in new subs?

dun forget about the excursion.

XXX's are wonderfull moofas. on a side note i believe the Atlas motors are also XBL^2. i has one sitting in my closet. also wonderful speakers. too bad my friend had to **** it up. if he didn't i'd have it set for HT. :/

it is used today in new subs. the new mag is xbl as well as a few others.

What I was told by RE was that, they could still be licensed to use the XBL setubut instead of renting the rights to make a motor, they decided to make a diferent motor all there own, hence the new XXX series.

I have a few XXX subs laying around. One of my fav subs to date!!! Would take 2.5-3k daily if you knew what u were doin and for burps, the skies the limit on power. I burped one of mine with a SS XXX6500D @ 17 volts in a 4.0 box @ 30 hz and busted a 148.5 at the dash in a durango.

They went with a split coil rather than a split gap technology -- correct.

The XXX was really popular because it took a linear BL approach (XBL^2) and put it in a package that could take a lot of abuse. The XXX had more throw in the motor than it was mechanically capable of and it would still take a ton of abuse. And where the Brahma had close to as much throw, it couldn't take near as much power. So the XXX made for an excellent daily beater. If I remember correctly, the XXX was an 8 layer flatwound aluminum voice coil...helps make up for the smaller XBL^2 voice coil.

Why did they switch? The politics of royalties and licensing are detrimental to many. Scott has said many times before that he doesn't like licensing approaches and you can see in all the products that he makes that he prefers to keep as much control over the end result as possible. The switch to Split Coil is still a viable approach and the XXX could have been what the LMS-Ultra was a couple years later if the design had gone according to plan. Regardless, the new XXX is still a better driver than most subs on the market and arguably makes for a better subwoofer than the old XXX; the only detriment is its efficiency.

There are still XBL^2 drivers available. Dan Wiggins (formerly of Adire Audio, now of ADI) still owns the patent for XBL^2. Right now, XBL^2 is used in drivers (both subwoofers and mids) from Creative Sound Solutions, Exodus Audio, GR Research, and the upcoming Stereo Integrity Mag and BM. There are actually more licensees than this for XBL^2 technology but not all are shared publicly.

Oh, and the XXX motors do not go for $300. If someone asked that, they would be crazy. The XXX motor is still very popular in the car audio scene but it's not being sold for $300. The Avalanche is really popular in the home audio scene and it goes for about the same price ($100-$150 for the motor and $250-$350 for a complete sub).

I believe they used an 8-layer flat wound. The MT had/has the option of either an 8 layer flatwound or 4 layer copper, not sure. Been so long since I've molested a sub.

BTW- AFAIK, I'm the only person that had XXX's with black powder coated baskets //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

XBL^2, such a pimp technology. From what I have seen in my research it is probably the best approach to make a good flat BL curve for a sub. LMS tech is up there too. Split coil is just too inefficient and also too complicated, but XBL is actually a quite simple approach.

Thanks for all the info guys! I now fully understand the XXX and what makes it special. This should be made a sticky in the subwoofer forum for all that it's worth and the info you guys posted. As many people on here that talk about these things and comment on their amazing quality and performance, this would be a great data bank for future inquiries.

Anyhow, thanks for the education. I can't wait!

adire wanted a grip load of money on the royalites. and ascendant and adire kinda got into a fued which I think started it all. it is still used but not as mainstream as it was. oh and when you get her built you'll find out as to why they are so popular lol. the xxx does has a beefy coil. I think it us a 4 layer flat wound and the avalanche used a round wire coil. almost looks as if they both share the same top plate.
adire was asking about 1-5% of the msrp for other companies to use xbl^2.. and dan wiggins came out saying the stuff about how not all companies make the same quality xbl^2 product.

You even presume that other XBL^2 drivers are equivalent to ours... Ever done some objective measurements to back that up? I have, and many OEMs have, and I can tell you that just because it says XBL^2 does not mean it's equal to all other XBL^2 drivers...
given he didn't say it in the best manner, and did not mean it to be offensive..
