Why all the hate on W7's?

Any sub will sound like crap in a wrongly tuned BP enclosure and trying to judge a sub in gerenal based on its performance in a bandpass? That's pretty ignorant. As far as having problems with overexcursion below tuning, any sub on the planet will have overexcursion issues below tuning. If you understood how a tuned enclosure works you would quickly see why.

what i ment about over excursion with the w7 is this..when they over excurt or even move a decent amount...u get a bad case of tinsel slap....i mean real bad...i took a vid of a 13w7 in a ported box and i had my friend play a 1hz-35hz sweep and when it got to around 18hz and up..u hear the slaping as if a little man is inside the box banging on the back of the cone.

but anyway the w7 is a good sub ..but for what i want it to do..it doesnt do it...imho

and i heard ALOT of w7 setups...i designed some setups my self..everything from 1 12w7 to 6 12w7's so i know how those boogers work and if u want the w7's to hit the low lows it will do it but not with much authority....just recently i had my 2 se12's go against my friends 2 12w7's and he had me in output which was expected but as far as hitting the lows...mines had more umph and he knew it

unless jl retools the w7's to hit the lows well and still get loud u MIGHT see me sneaking a pair until then i'm not joining the bandwagon just watching

LOL you are the first person I've seen to complain about the W7s lows. Also, the W7 is pretty much void of all mechanical noise (until its far past its linear range), so I'm pretty sure that wasn't the dub 7's fault. JL was/is at least 5 years ahead on sub technology IMHO, which doesn't mean much. RE coming out with their new stuff and it might be better BUT now all the RE deep throaters got nothing because everything has is expensive as hell. I'm no expert and I like RE/ID/SS etc but this is my view on them in a nut shell

IDMAX - when is it ever in stock/wait

RE - $$/bad communication/no idea how the new owner will be with them

SS - good CS but do they really compare to the W7?

DD - Good stuff but their top line is $$ too, contact with theml ately(understandable)

ED - well they are budget and do not have anything that compares to a W7

I have went through subs from ID/RE/SS/ED and its been the top of the line from all and they all have their strong points and to everyones ears some are better than others. W7 is the bench mark to what all the others are compared to so that in my mind says enough.

I wonder whats going to happen when they comeout with their new sub.........

A: Just because a n00b praises a product, doesn't make it crappy.I mean, look at the majority of the members of this forum and RE.Enough said there.
B: Two words: Custom Tooling

C: The 3 ohm SVC was claimed to be part of the design phase for sound quality.

D: Their current system is actually pretty creative.Allows them to get a little more cone area in.Looks a lot cleaner too IMHO.

B. 3ohm SVC being sound quality is plain marketing BS. versus DVC2 or DVC4 theres an extremly minimal difference in former weight, and nominal impedance. being 3ohm does not make it better or worse. just a pain in the *** for some installs.

C. i agree, custom tooling is espensive. but not $1000 each espensive. but i guess when everyone is made to believe they are the end all be all of speakerwoofers, they can charge whatever they want huh?

D. oh, by all means its quite creative. and it looks nice too. but i care not about creativity and looks when i want performance and ease of use. those **** rings are fragile, if you kink\bend them on accident, you pretty much need to get new ones or try and bend them back into place. the surround is foam, so you have to be careful not to rub all over it with the drill\screw when you mount them. just bleh.

i have my oppinions. i never said they arent good ultra low frequency transducers. i only have my oppinions about the design that i dont like. that is all.

cuz the soundsplinter rl-s 12 is much cleaner.no let me rephrase that..ALOT cleaner than the w7 and in the right box can get louder than the w7

seriously..i would put a rl-s 12 against a 12w7 any day and sit back and watch the rl-s murder the 12w7 in the lows and output and it has a single 4 ohm coil..it go's to show u can have a clean sq sub without having a odd number coil

please understand something:

JL Audio did not say the svc 3 ohm coils are the best coils for every application; they said they were the best for their application.

you think there is no difference between a dvc2, dvc4, etc vc and yet you seem to forget one thing:

what 5 basic parameters are used to determine everything else?

- Mms: moving mass

- BL: motor force factor

- Re: DC resistance of the voice coil

- Sd: surface area of the cone

- Cms: compliance of the suspension

so if there is a change in Re, there will be a change in the rest of the parameters.

i am in no way a big fan of JL Audio, but get off the hate wagon and read through both the Marketing and the Anti-Marketing.
