The same reason some of us hate type r's, to many band wagon *****s. They're good subs, I like the way the sound for the most part, plus I used to think they had the sexiest surround ever, but the 06 XXX now has them beat on that now. O yeah, the price is a little stupid high if you compare it to what else you can buy with your $. Its a nice sub tho...

W7s are in production how long now?

I know easily they have been surpassed by other brands and usually for less money

I personally cant deal with using a hyped up product like that and pay double for it

hence why I run TDX's which are on par with W7s in every aspect except price...

I am pretty positive the RE's new jumbo woofers will pwn all of the above mentioned and still be cheaper than a W7

Gonna have to disagree with you on everything except the whole RE thing (which I'm also very skeptical about)

You might feel that the TDX is just as good, but the W7 does have advantages over it and is capable of playing cleaner and louder technically. Same goes for pretty much all other SQL woofers out there except for the new XXX.

the only subs i will buy from jl is the w3 line

other than that i will have tcsounds build me a sub to pwnd the w7

the w7 subs are good subs dont get me wrong but for the money there asking its not worth it....

they sound good sealed but in a bandpass it sounds like a high powered midbass

and in ported box they over excurt easly below tuning freq

ive heard a Eclipse 15" Alum. PWN a W-7 in a 1 cu. ft. box with a RF. BD1000...and that PWN is sealed vs W-7 Ported...won in both aspects. I have heard 1 12W-7 setup that was very impressive...almost kept up with my 2 12's right now

Any sub will sound like crap in a wrongly tuned BP enclosure and trying to judge a sub in gerenal based on its performance in a bandpass? That's pretty ignorant. As far as having problems with overexcursion below tuning, any sub on the planet will have overexcursion issues below tuning. If you understood how a tuned enclosure works you would quickly see why.

I am on the whole a JL fan and have been using their products since the early 90's, when most people had never heard of them, but I am far from a bandwagon fanboy. I do applaud the way that JL supports their dealers and their product. Their products are expensive for a reason: they do all their own development and patent their designs. All this costs money. Since they don't use a buildhouse and don't share their technologies with a number of other brands by building woofers for rebadging the cost can't be amortized through multiple channels. Their sub's prices generally reflect what they have invested in them. All that being said, I will probably never buy a W7 or W6. I don't care bout getting that loud and since loud is not one of my criteria for selection, I don't need the long throw linearity and the high pricetag associated with that.

I have also noticed a lot of people that have unrealistic expectations for what they will get from a JL sub. They expect that since it's expensive, it will be the loudest thing out there. JL subs are not meant to bet street beaters, though they can do an OK job of it. Other than the W7, they were not meant to take a lot of power because they don't need it to do their intended job. JL subs were not meant to win SPL contests. They were meant to reproduce the lower octaves of music accurately, at moderate levels with a smallish amount of power. They are SQ woofers. The W6 and W7 have the capability of getting very loud, but that is more a byproduct of the design route taken to make sure that they sound good rather than a design goal in itself. Most of the people that hate on the W7 cite that they can get louder for the money. I would sure hope so, getting louder than a top of the line SQ woofer? That must really be a sorce of pride. That's like saying your sports car is quicker than a pickup truck. Not really something worth bragging about. The W7 is more flexible than most drivers though. It can be made to get pretty **** loud or sound really good or sound better than most while getting louder than most, but with anything, there are tradeoffs. For the best SQ, you have to give up some SPL and vice versa. In a pure SQ setup, it will not get into the realm of what most would consider loud. In a pure SPL setup, it will like all subs sound like trash and there is the full range of combinations in between. Like with any sub, where in that range you want to set it up is up to the user. That the W7 can run the full range is to its credit (though it won't stand a chance against the purpose built SPL drivers in sheer output even when configured for that).

Basically the point of my post is that the vasst majority of people that hate on the W7 don't know what they are talking about. They see a pricetag and they make unfounded assumptions about what they should expect and when it fails to meet those unrealistic expectations, they form their opinion. If you don't like JL buy something else. If you need your stereo to make you feel special, get a life. If you feel better about yourself by riding down something that you can't afford quit with your sour grapes. If you have honestly tried the gear in question and experimented with it and figured out its strengths and limitations and found that something else better suits your needs, then you can talk, but I have a feeling that there are very few people in that situation whether they stuck with the W7 or decided that something else suited their needs better that would really have much bad to say about JL products. They didn't get to where they are by making crap.

Because people are stupid. I see a lot of people on these forums that go through all the internet woofers that are supposedly as good or better than the W7, and then end up with the W7 because quite frankly, the internet woofers just aren't as good.
Mainstream or not and price aside they are amazing subs.

I have played with almost every internet "boner" sub and to say the least, I am not that impressed with em'.People saying "yeah it'll slaughter when it really doesn't in a direct swap out.I've had enough of the "internet" company subs.Take the XXX for example (old one).Lots of people still say it gets louder and sounds better than the W7 at half the price (can't say that anymore) .Sound Quality is VERY subjective.I personally do not like the thin *** sound of the XXX, too lifeless, unreal.They can get *sorta* loud, but IMO its a weird loud that sounds like it has no balls.In short, I hate that sound.The W7 has a "fatter" more natural sound to it.I just like it a lot more.

Power.Most people don't want/can't afford 2 million watts to get the XXX to its "potential".And if they can afford the power, they can't afford the electrical to support it.I'm talking about regular people here.

Box size.For what they do, the W7's need fairly small sealed boxes.This is what most consumers want.Big sound, little box.Granted, when you're talking ported the size can get up there.

Now, onto the pricing.If some of you people would ever leave your ****ing computer, and step into the real world.You'd find that W7's aren't all THAT expensive.I got a 12" W7 for a little over $400.FYI I don't even have it anymore.I had to return it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif And I've seen tons of people who have gotten 12's from dealers BNIB w/ warranty for $400-$550.

You people ***** and ***** about pricing, but if I remember correctly, the XXX new, direct, cost about $400ish.So don't start that "half the price" bull shit.When was the last time you saw a fully functional XXX that was brand new with warranty go for $250?

As you can see, everything gets compared to the W7, why?It set the benchmark in performance.Like others have posted, yeah there are subs that get louder.Yeah there are subs the *might* sound better (subjective....remember?).But try finding one to do both.

Will I be buying a W7 again anytime soon?I doubt it.I have a current sub that suites me just fine as it stands.
