Which would you prefer?

I'm getting a new pair of components soon because my brother's no name Dragster comps are killing me. (He got a new car so I got his) The tweeters are harsh, the midbass is lacking. So I've narrowed it down to two sets. MB Quart Premium 216's or Alpine SPX-177R (not a!) so the price range is give or take a few bills, $250. Right now, I have a RF punch 360 powering the speakers and if necessary I can get another amp so power isn't a problem for either of the two sets. Has anyone had any experience with these? If so, positive or negative and so on and so forth? Thanks for the replies...and please no third party brands (CDT, Rainbow, ID, etc) unless you have had BAD experiences, not reading about them, with both sets I listed!

P.S. I know about don't post x vs y threads, but...well...I can't help it!!!1!!1!!!

considering the two you mentioned, and that fact that you dont want third party brands have something in common- you HAVE NOT listened to any of them

so my answer is- get neither until you can make an educated choice yourself

you have not specified your choice of music either....

I know...I went and heard the premiums just now. I've heard the CL-61a i think, key word i think, and wasn't that impressed, something turned me off. No one sells CDT around here, or rainbow, or focal, or ID, or many high end things. MB quart is the highest, that and JL and some knock-off of memphis. I would hear the type-x, but they haven't been shipped in to the store! The infinity perfects were too harsh for me, i wasn't impressed with any RF stuff. I like the MB quart, but don't know if I want to dish out all that much, so I wanted opinions on the type-x mainly so I could get an idea of what they were before I hear them myself and get them. I don't want to get all hyped up about it and go to the store and be a chode and say "I want those!" then hear them and they sound bad compared to the premium and especially the q-line! well...my preference is mainly rock. Oh well.

Dont you have a BestBuy/Circuit City nearby ? they sell Alpine comps there.....perhaps the can play'm off the wall

Other than that, it sounds your heart is set on the mbquartz- which if its what you want, dont second guess yourself- Believe me its not often people say they like mbquartz, so that must mean they are really your type- go for'm

Nope, I've already tried. They don't and won't get stuff in that high in price...I asked. I'm just going to wait for the call from Audio Express when the type-x's come in. Listen to em, and make a decision. I don't want to get something because a few people say "it's good!" I like to hear it first. Too bad those q-line's are lowest $500 :p It's just a waiting game so might as well let the thread die

the new type X's are supposed to be very nice ( Vifa xt's i think ) so thats a good option, if you like mb quart then go for them, i just think its funny since you mentioned you dont like harsh highs and MB Quarts lean in that direction ( well the ones Ive heard ).

what size mounting holes do you have because i can get sme serious sweet deals on memphis speakers. i had oz vector components which were sweet and i switched to memphis 2-ways and they are much better than the oz.

I haven't heard the Type-Xs, but I have heard the MBQuarts. The Quarts sounded very good overall. The tweets were very clear and detailed and seemed pretty loud and the midrange was also very detailed. The midbass was slightly lacking IMO. I like my JL XRs a lot, they just have a very "natural" sound to them, but they don't get as loud as the Quarts. So if you want mainstream, you could always look at those too.

Well, I'm going to stop being a prick about my options...I might as well blow some dough on nice speakers as I plan to have them for a while and in my next car whenever I get it. So...other any opinions on other companies like adire or RE? They both seem popular Yeah, I just found out from a guy that worked at the shop...someone noticed that the q-line and premium tweets sounded the same...well, because they were...they had installed the q-line tweet for the premium series...I went back and heard it. They were somewhat harsh. but the q-line isn't. I'm not going to spend $500 minimum for the q-line's...so I think I've bumped my price from like 250 to 350 or so...I'll try to hear other brands, but it's not likely so I just might have to go on other people's opinions....I just want nice mid-bass...preferably get low if possible and not harsh tweets. 6.5" speaker size, but if I'm going to get nice speakers...evenventually I'm going to make kicks for them...so...size wouldn't really matter!
