which would you prefer and why?

Adding another woofer in the same airspace with the same power will yield an approximate 3db gain. So 2 12's....but this is only if were talking about the same ones.
As far as one xxx vs 2 se's.... two se's will get much louder then a single xxx unless u go one xxx ported in 3 cubes vs the two se's sealed in a cube each for example.....So My verdict is 2 se's in a big ported box tuned low. The xxx will ahve better sq, but the se's will get louder and still have good sq.
Two 12's have twice as much cone area as a single 12 (obviously) and would yield a +3db as you mentioned, but you left out the other half of the equation where the single driver accomodates twice as much power. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, what is being compared is the amount of air displaced. If the single XXX12 excurts twice as much as each SE12, output would be equal, in same type enclosures. I agree the pair of SE's would probably be louder, but not by 3db's.

just kiddin....... thats not my answer............ i say blow them all to hell with a memphis mojo amp and be done with it.

thats not my answer either. more power less cone area. i'd do the single driver setup, and run all the power to it.

18+18= 36 xxx=32 ......Also not all xmax is the same. Just because sub a moves 20mm and sub b moves 28mm does not mean sub b will be louder. It's all about where the sub moves this much(freq.) and how much excursion is their across the board. You also gotta take into account that most sq subs move a lot down low and keep moving low, while spl subs are not as valuable down low but move a lot in the higher bass notes. Yes xmax is important its not everything. And still the se's combined move more air then a single xxx. Also when I talked to RE before I was told a pair of se's will get much louder then a single xxx...... I'm not sayin se's are strictly geared for spl or even moreso then the xxx juss explaining not all xmax is the same.

You misunderstood me completely. Nowhere did I say xmax (actually I used the term excursion, which included xsus) was everything. My point was about air displaced.

In my example, when I said if the XXX displaced twice as much, I didnt mean on paper, the specs. I meant in the actual situation. One sub excurting twice as much as two other same sized subs will equal same output. Comparing advertised xmax figures does not answer this variable. Enclosure design, power compression, and many other variables need to be accounted for.

As for not all xmax's being equal, and at which frequency it will obtain its advertised xmax, I think you are a bit confused. Different subs do not simply acheive different excursion levels at different frequencies depending on the subwoofer, that is 100% enclosure dependant and irrelevant when comparing drivers. Each driver can be put into an enclosure with the same tuning. And at that point, excursion differences due to freq changes will be the same between the two drivers.

SPL subs do not always (or even generally) not extend low. Its true SPL installs do not extend low, but this is due strictly to the tuning freq of the enclosure used being relatively high to match the vehicle's resonant freq, it has nothing to do with the driver used. I guarantee in the proper install, a Stroker, MT, 9500 or SoloX will have zero problem dropping below 20hz.

Which would be louder would depend on the enclosure, tuning freq, and power used between the two setups. But yes, as I said in my other post, the SE's have the advantage in output. I did not say otherwise. You said they would be 3db's louder due to double the cone area, that's what I was pointing out that's not true.

Fs. so yes they do have diff excursions at diff freq. But that's beside the point there's no need to get all techie the point is 2 se's are louder then a single xxx of the same size if my word isn't good enuff give re a call they'll tell you the same.

What about for a guy on a budget. Say I have $500 to spend on an amp, sub(s), and a box. I like rap and classic rock. I like my hearing the way it is, so I never turn it up to ear-bleeding levels. I want the ability to be punched in the chest with bass and I also want it to sound good. A good balance. With only so much money to spend, is it wiser to go with one sub or two?

For example, say you have two subs in a box. Is it cheaper to take the money you spent on both subs and the big box and instead spend it on a much higher-quality single sub and smaller box (cuz it only holds one)? I don't know if the amp would need to be different.

Can you buy adire audio subs from anywhere other than their home site?

And could you give me a brief description of the difference between the Shiva, Tempest, and Brahma (including price)?
