the two amps i am looking into are both alpine

actually it's 4 but i think the 2 pairs are almost the same.....maybe....

mrdm300

And this is the sub i am looking at: the Alpine Type-R SWR-1241D 12 inch

Since i am a n00b at car audio still - i need advice on what amp i need or which would match it better - and how i should wire it (4 ohm or 2 ohm)

I am also up for a little criticism on the selection of amp/subs - but just a little //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

if you want an alpine, then your best bet is the mrd-m500

but there is also

the vr600d

us amps de-500

there are a lot others and you do know that the type r 12" can handle 400-600rms, alpine underrates their subs. if you dont want that much the whole time, just turn down the gain. easy as a turn of a screw.

so if i got the type r 12 inch and the mrd-m500 how would i wire it? 2 ohm or 4 ohm

i'm confused about how to configure the dual voice coils - it's a 4 ohm sub but would it be 4ohm times 2 voice coils = 2 ohm?

also what gauge wire should i get with this? for amp and power

The MRD 501 is on sale as well as the MRD 301. I'd go ahead and get the larger amp (501) and wire it down to mono 2 ohms which is 550 Watts RMS @ 14.4 volts. These amps have the (purchased seperately) LCD that you mount up front and you can contol everything on the amp from your car seat, of course you do not have to buy this extra feature. Also think about the wiring configuration in case you might want to purchase another sub in the future. If you were planning on doing this I would get a dual 2 ohm if they have it, that way you could add another woofer in the future and still maintain the 2 ohm load for the amp. Also here is a sub wiring link.

thanks for the great advice - wha't would be the pro or con to getting that 2ohm sub instead of the 4ohm - will it sound any different? cuz i don't know if i would get another sub that 1 12inch sub is good enuf i think - 2 won't make a lot of difference

The only difference between the 301 and 300 as well as the 501 and 500 is that the 301/501 amps are compatible with the new Alpine decks (the decks can run them), the 300/500 amps are just like last year's models. Check out http://www.alpine-usa.com for specs and info.

And if you are running only one Type R, get a dual 4ohm sub, since the Alpine amps are only good down to 2 ohms.
