Which amp would work best for me?

After what seems like a ton of research I still cannot figure out which amp would work best for me. I am purchasing a single Image Dynamics ID10 D4 v.3 Subwoofer. According to SonicElectronix RMS power handling is 250w with a peak power handling of 450w, impedence (per coil) 4ohms with dual voice coils. I'm quite new to the subwoofer world and all these numbers confuse the heck out of me. I want to know which amp would work best for this particular sub? I listen to a variety of rock, rap, country, reggae, etc... Sorry for such a long read and thanks for any help you can provide folks!

Look for an amp that is 250rms at 2 ohms

Thanks for the reply bowhunter. I have found a few amps that I think meet your suggestion let me know which one you think is best suited.

Rockford Fosgate R250x1 : Rockford Fosgate R250X.1 (R250X1) 250W Mono Class AB Prime Amp

Jl Audio JX250/1: JL Audio JX250/1 (JX2501) 250W RMS, 1-Chan Class A/B JX Amplifier

Alpine MRV-M250: Alpine MRV-M250 (mrvm250) 250W Mono Block V-Power Subwoofer

Also wondering if it would be safe to run an amp with more than 250w? Maybe something like this: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_34759_Rockford-Fosgate-PBR300X1.html

You can usually run a more powerful amp, as long as you set gains properly. We call it headroom, so you are not trying to get an amp to do more that it is designed too, it also helps to prevent clipping. I have a dc 12, that is a 1400wrms amp on a sundown amp that is giving the sub a little more than rated. So a 300wrms amp would be fine.

The sub you have can be wired to either 2Ω or 8Ω. For car audio, 2Ω is the best choice since car audio amps are rated for 4Ω and lower impedances.

All of the amps you listed, except the last one, are rated for 250 watts at 2Ω. The last one is rated for 300 watts at 1Ω ad only 150 watts at 2Ω, so you'd never see 300 watts from it, given that your sub can only be wired down to 2Ω.

With that said, the first three amps would work fine for you, although I would recommend buying an amp that will do what you want at 2Ω and is also 1Ω stable. The reason why is in case you decide you want more in the future... you could just add another sub but still keep the same amp.

The CT Sounds AT500.1 is rated at 600 watts into 1Ω and 300 watts into 2Ω, so it fits that scenario nicely. And since I'm a CT Sounds dealer, that's the only thing I'm gonna recommend, although there are plenty of other amps that will do what you need. ;-)

As for over powering a sub, there is nothing at all wrong with it but unless you have a pretty clear understanding of the implications, I don't recommend over powering by more than ~25%, to be safe.

I believe Steve Meade did a burp on one of those PBR Rockford Fosgate amps and hit **** near a 150. I strongly believe that PBR 300x1 is putting out atleast 800 - 900 rms lol

Really? Doing 2 times rated? I don't think so. Op if you haven't bought the sub yet get an alpine type r and look into a used Rockford fosgate 500 watt mono. The bd model these amps are normally underrated but by like 100-250 watts and the alpine is 1000 wrms.

It was a sarcastic post.

That PBR would do fine on that sub

Yabut... that amp uses capacitors to boost the rail voltage and everyone here knows that caps do more harm than good. :p

But seriously, it's a good amp but it cannot be doing that much power. Not because I don't want it to but because the rail voltage won't allow it. Best you could hope for is ~288 watts at 2Ω and 576 watts at 1Ω... in a perfect world.
