ive had this problem for quite some time and just figured that it was the sub but after thinking about it there is no way. the problem is that for certain songs i have great bass but then some songs sounds like there is no bass at all in fact my rear speakers make more noise than the sub. for example poppin my collar and still fly, which should be really loud has no bass at all. then that new song by mariah carey or sound of revenge has excellent bass. i used to have the lp filter at 80hz then i went down to 50hz still doing the same problem then i tried it at 125hz still didnt fix this problem. im so tired of haveing sonys and crossfire beating my sub. wtf i have a 15" mag i shouldnt be having this problem. please help. thanks

~1600 wrms to 15" mag

~1/2 bass boost on

50-60hz lpf

i can turn the volume all the way to 32 its just that there is no bass to turn up. and when i say bass boost im not talking about the knob thing but the setting on the amp.

check this out: just because a song sounds like it has some obvious-sounding bass to you doesn't mean it is bass that is 'loud'. i once thought Still Fly by the Big Tymers would be a song that would get my subs moving. i was wrong. still fly has a bass-line that consists of some pretty high-end bass. out of the whole bassline, about two or three notes dip into the "subsonic frequency" range.. the rest play in a higher octave that the mids would generally handle. first of all, you can set your LPF low.. to say, 50.. but the problem (to YOU) is that all the frequencies over 50 wont be played through the sub.. and in STILL FLY.. alot of the bassline extends beyond 50hz. so you think to yourself, "ok maybe i should up the x-over". let's say you set it at 150 hz. well when you do that you probably are covering more frequencies that the song'

s bassline plays in but the fact now, is that maybe the subwoofer doesn't have a good linear response from 10 hz all the way through to 150 hz.. so some of the bass might seem less audible than others, or there might a be a nasty peak somewhere you don't want it to be. well, to compensate for all this (i use to have my lpf at 50) i raised my LpF a little.. to 85 hz. and i've used an RTA to smooth out my frequency response. so when i play still fly, the frequencies that are being pushed out by my sub are AS LOUD (in dB) as the bass frequencies being pushed out by my mids!! but obviously, the bass that comes from my sub has some SPL value to it while the bass coming from my mids has less SPL value. but to the ear, all the bass sounds even. it's beautiful-sounding in my car.. and i haven't even deadened yet:D

thanks that does make sense but the only thing is that in like my friends cars that have just the usual cheap brand subs and small amps all songs have great bass. of course it may be sloppy and not sound to great. also their amps are set basically the same as mine on a count of the fact that i installed them for them. but tommarrow im gonna mess with my h/u a bit. also if i set the lpf on the amp to the max which i think is 160 and then just did the filtering on my h/u is that alright. its just so hard to try and mess with the amp because its bolted on the back of my box which is bolted to the car so i cant really fine tune it without doing a bunch of work.

yes that's perfectly fine that's what you're SUPPOSE to do if you wan't to use the x-over on the HU:thumbsup: that's what im doing.. except my audiocontrol EQX is crossing the frequencies over.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

what kind of amp is it btw
now i know its a supposed horrible amp but i think it works actually real well compared to my previous amp which was a hifonics bx1500d. the amp i have now is a boss ripd3.

also i know this maybe a stupid question but whats the difference of the x-over and crossover on my head unit. i always figured the x-over was used more for fine tuning but im guessing thats wrong.

the differences between the amps x-over and the head unit's x-over could be the crossover slope. the slopes are usually 12 db, 18db, or 24 db (12 and 24 being the more common ones). basically what this means is:

in a 24db slope with the crossover at 50 hz, 100 hz (which is one octave up from 50hz), would be 24 db less than 50 hz.

in a 12db slope with the crossover at 50 hz, 100 hz (which is one octave up from 50hz), would be 12 db less than 50 hz.

find out if your HU is 12 db or 24 db or if its adjustable. check your amps manual to see what slope it uses.
