Where to get XP?

i dont know if you're going to college but you if you are or know someone who is go to the campus bookstore you can get a legit copy of windows dirt cheap.
I am going to college. Actually I'm going to two different schools. I never thought of this.

You can get free copies of software from the library. I got MS Visual Studio(c++) for a class. Win Xp was available. You just have to get a sheet from a professor saying you need the software.

If you have enough courses to be consider full time at either one, then you ae entitled to student software and OS at an incredible discount. Look into it. If not then Newegg is your best bet IMO. BTW, if Newegg is the online store you mention never knowing about then just end your life //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE knows Newegg. they are the best buy of the intert00bz, except better.

By the way, pirating OS/Software only increases the prices for us who actually pay for what we want, so end yourselves doucherockets. I hate people who want a windows OS but don't want to buy it. I'm sure you'd love to run a business where you would just give shit away too. Just use Linux distros if you don't want to pay for an OS.

Dumb****s.

Thats funny, because I actually do exclusively use Linux... not because I give a shit about pirating, because its simply superior. People who pirate Windows don't even put a dent in Microsoft's profits. 90% of PC manufacturers already bundle Windows with the PCs and they are legally paid for. Most of the Windows "pirates" are simply people who lost their CD and/or CD keys.

VERY LAUGHABLE! I don't even know of one person who falls in this category. Go kid yourself, because you aren't fooling me. I don't care what rationale people use (lost keys, cost, aren't hurting MS profits) it isn't right. PERIOD!
If Linux is soooo superior then why isn't everything developed for it? Shit, if I could play current games easily on it, I would use it exclusively, but for now I have to settle for dual booting Ubuntu and XP Pro(happily paid for). Newer linux distros are great, but are still quite a ways from being able to break into the mainstream market. What is easy for geeks is considered cumbersome and troublesome for the sheeple.

BTW, I lost my car, should I just go steal one from the nearest lot? Oh, now tell me how I am comparing tangible product to Virtual product as if that matters.

Pretty much everything you need IS developed for it. The ONLY thing it doesn't have is games, and even then the Linux community is working its tail off to get support. Its not because Linux isn't superior, its because Windows owns over 90% of the market... so why would developers use all their resources to create games for less than 10% of users?

BTW I fix computers for tons of people and they always give me these Dell/Gateway/whatever computers and about 60% of them can't find their Windows CD. You think I urge them to pay 200$ for Winblows each time they want to format? Hell no I just pirate that shit. In fact I can't think of many people who don't fit this bill unless you built your own computer from scratch, which is maybe 5% of PC users.

They shouldn't be careless with their shit. It still isn't right I don't care what spin is used. If you fix computers under any "business" structure and leave paper trails for these pirate acts, your nuts will be nailed to the cross if these machines by some very small chance are audited. Your customers will roll on you and you will pay the penalty for putting pirated wares on heir machine. No way in hell I would do that for anyone. Even if the chance is as small as Cotjones dick.

Linux isn't superior for the mass market. It isn't easy enough for sheeple who can't even keep track of their keys much less worry about repos, tarballs and the ilk. You can't get many industry standard titles on linux either, not just games. Are there semi-equivalent open source version? sure of course there are but companies aren't moving to a non-standard platform until shown it is absolutely needed. BTW, Linux communities have been working their collective butts off for years on getting games to run the same, but until they convince developers, it aint happenin. You are right about these developers not wanting to. It only makes sense.

I don't find either superior. Both have ups and downs. This is why I dual boot. I also dual boot to somewhat stay in touch with Linux in case one day it does actually get some kind of marketshare. I honestly hope it does. More than one player is always a good thing. This is just a tricky market to do so.

I don't fix these computers under any business, just for friends and family. I don't have the time to deal with obtaining a legal copy of Windows for each format.

I'd say the only reason that Linux isn't fit for the mass market is because people are so used to doing things the Windows way. Linux really isn't much harder to use and its VERY rare when I actually have to start dealing with tarballs and the like. You being an Ubuntu user should know very well how easy it is to install apps using the package manager. Typing sudo apt-get install xmms is about 50x easier than going to the winamp website, downloading the app, installing, making sure the app doesn't hijack your machine with all its BS, and then deleting the install files.

You are also way off base claiming that the Linux community has been working for years trying to get games to run the same. Games already do run the same, we just have no big name developers to create them yet. Try getting the Linux version of Unreal Tournament 2004 and running it, guess what.. it'll be exactly the same if not better. Theres nothing to convince the developers of, there just isn't a large enough customer base yet.

Where I work we use both a Linux Debian Server and a Windows Server. The Debian server has been running for over a year with no problems and without ever being rebooted. The Windows server has occasional issues and needs to be restarted EVERY week otherwise it slows to a crawl.

Yes to me and you, repos are easy. Also a lot of good software in them, but the main user won't have such foolery. They want to bring a CD home from BB and just let it install all on its own. With spyware and all lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
I mean mainstream DX titles that people want to play don't play on Linux. Don't mis mash what I am saying, you know what I mean. People have been trying to make good emulators and such since the days of quake and UT. The mass market isn't geek oriented, if they know how to do it a certain way, they won't bother with learning a new way. Why should they? They aren't inclined to this stuff and don't care to be.

You also know what I meant by convincing developers. Convincing them of a reason to develop, IE getting a customer base and market share. You said exactly what I conveyed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

The community should start by developing games themselves that people will want to play and market them. Simple as that. Shouldn't be too hard to convince PC gamers to install a FREE OS if their is a game they HAVE to play //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

If you are waiting for consumers to just magically say "im sick of just M$, lets all support the open source" then don't hold your breath lol.
