Where does depression come from?

Depression in males comes from mainly a lack of testosterone, serotonin or dopamine. Could be all of the above.

Taking melatonin at night when you go to bed will help your brain produce serotonin revitalize your dopamine receptors.

Its from a lack of seratonin in the brain. Get on some meds, worked for me. Drugs and booze doesnt work. Tried it for 10 years. All these guys on here say its just life and its tough, but everyone has different life experiences and thresholds not one thing works for everything. Wrecking a car and having tough school is hard for some, but not near as bad as watching your mom die of cancer after 2 year battle, or losing a friend in a car crash.

It is much more complicated than that, I have read. For example, suppose you suffer from clinical depression and are prescribed medication to raise your serotonin levels. Your levels of serotonin can be restored within a week, but it can take a month or more for the depressive symptoms to subside. It is not completely understood right now what causes depression.

i understand what you are trying to say i lost my grandmother to breast cancer and my mom had it and made it through 3 years ago... He is obviously still in high school and just my two cents that he should try and strive to make himself happy and overcome tough times without resorting to medications... because those meds are gonna have a whole mess of side effects that he will have to overcome also... not sayin to drink or do drugs but change perspective on life and see it from a different view

Alcohol has never, ever worked for me. I also have lost the taste for it. For some, it is more dangerous (mentally and physically) to get drunk Friday and Saturday night to un-wind than it would be for them to take antidepression medication on a regular basis.

I've never been so down that alcohol couldn't fix it, give it a try
yeah, it helps me too. I have been drinking friday and saturday nights for the past year pretty much up until a few weeks ago. I finally took it to an extreme on pure accident with captain morgan(i dont normally drink liquor) and could have wound up dead, killing someone, and/or in jail. Luckily i didnt get any of those things, but i stopped drinking for the past 4 weeks. I have a thread about it actually that no one appreciated haha..

BTW you guys were not nearly as mean as you normally are on some of these threads! I appreciate it and everything was better once i got out of the school environment.

Not all depressed people feel the need to die or anything. It is minor depression and inconvenience. Thanks for the support though.
x2.

But that's not my case //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I must be all of the above.
Once you start realizing that the majority of life either sucks or is indifferent you will start really looking forward to and fully enjoying the small amount of life that is truly good.

You can choose to dwell on either. Dwelling on the bad seems to keep you there, dwelling on the good seems to help get you to the next good time quicker.

As said above, booze helps create more good times

I have a high tolerance for liquor so my body usually processes it before I can get happy. I go from sober straight to the comedown. So alcohol can actually make me more depressed.

I doubt I have what is considered clinical depression in that I can be just fine even under times of stress, but there are some trigger points that really get to me and set me off into a bad mindstate. I would say my transition from college to the real world has been less than peachy. I guess you can say I have felt depressed before, but I never felt indecisive about how to change things. Probably its because as an adolescent you live life on rails so to speak and your path is set for you. Not so easy later.

And just to give you a heads up the 20's is kind of a sweet spot for mental illness to develop. So have fun and enjoy.

True. I understand that life isnt all fun and games. But, when there really isnt anything at all that keeps you happy it begins to ****.....
